Gojira have had five official members, and four of them make up the current line-up: brothers Joe Duplantier (vocals, guitar) and Mario Duplantier (drums), guitarist Christian Andreu and bassist Jean-Michel Labadie. The only former member is original bassist Alexandre Cornillon, who left in 1998.
The French heavy metal band comes from Ondres and was founded as Godzilla in 1996. The line-up has not changed since Labadie joined in 1998, and the band took the name Gojira in 2001, the year its first album, Terra Incognita, came out.
Gojira are known for progressive and technical death metal. The same four musicians took the band from what has been described as “the utmost obscurity during the first half of their career to widespread global recognition in the second”, which is why the member list is so short.
Joe Duplantier – Vocals and Guitar (1996–present)
Joe Duplantier is Gojira’s singer and one of its guitarists, and a founding member. His lyrics often deal with spirituality, philosophy and the environment, themes the band is known for. In 2025 Greg Kubacki stood in for him on guitar as a touring substitute.
Mario Duplantier – Drums (1996–present)
Mario Duplantier, Joe’s brother, has been the drummer since the band began as Godzilla in 1996. In 2026 Luigi Paraventi filled in for him on drums as a touring substitute.
Christian Andreu – Guitar (1996–present)
Christian Andreu has played guitar since 1996 and is the third founding member still in the band. In 2022 Aldrick Guadagnino played guitar in his place on tour.
Jean-Michel Labadie – Bass (1998–present)
Jean-Michel Labadie took over bass in 1998. It was the band’s only line-up change, and he has played on every Gojira album, from Terra Incognita (2001) and The Link (2003) onwards.
Alexandre Cornillon – Bass (1996–1998)
Alexandre Cornillon was the original bassist in the Godzilla years. He left in 1998, before the band released an album under the Gojira name.
Touring Substitutes
Gojira have never replaced a member since 1998. Instead, the band has used short-term stand-ins:
- Aldrick Guadagnino: guitar in 2022, substituting for Christian Andreu.
- Greg Kubacki: guitar in 2025, substituting for Joe Duplantier.
- Luigi Paraventi: drums in 2026, substituting for Mario Duplantier.
