Social Distortion have had twenty official members since Mike Ness formed the band in Fullerton, California, in 1978, and Ness is the only constant. The current line-up, intact since 2010 and the longest-lasting in the band’s history, is Ness (lead vocals and lead guitar), Jonny “2 Bags” Wickersham (rhythm guitar), Brent Harding (bass) and David Hidalgo Jr. (drums). The best-known former members are rhythm guitarist Dennis Danell, who died in 2000 after 21 years in the band, bassist John Maurer and drummers Christopher Reece and Charlie Quintana.
The original 1978 line-up was Ness with bassist Mark Garrett, drummer Casey Royer and singer Tom Corvin. Here is every member, with roles and years as the band’s own member list gives them.
Mike Ness – Lead Vocals, Lead Guitar (1978–present)
Ness founded the band, has played on every release, and led it back after a mid-1980s hiatus caused by his drug addiction and legal troubles, after which the band’s sound took on country, blues and early rock-and-roll influences.
Jonny “2 Bags” Wickersham – Rhythm Guitar, Backing Vocals (2000–present)
Wickersham took over rhythm guitar after Danell’s death in 2000 and has played on every release since Sex, Love and Rock ‘n’ Roll (2004).

Harding replaced Matt Freeman in 2005 and has played on every release since the single “Far Behind” (2007).

Hidalgo joined in 2010 after Atom Willard’s departure and drums on Born to Kill (2026).
Dennis Danell – Bass (1979–1981), Rhythm Guitar (1981–2000)
Danell joined on bass in 1979, moved to rhythm guitar in 1981 and played on every release from the “Mainliner/Playpen” single (1981) to Live at the Roxy (1998), until his death in 2000.
John Maurer – Bass, Backing Vocals (1984–2004)
Maurer played bass for twenty years, on every release from Prison Bound (1988) to Live in Orange County (2004).
