Line-ups and Albums
The Coasters released eight studio albums between 1957 and 2021. Below is an overview of which members were active in the year each album was released, based strictly on their years of membership.
- The Coasters (1957): Members active in 1957 were Adolph Jacobs (guitar), Billy Guy (baritone vocals), Bobby Nunn (bass vocals), Carl Gardner (lead vocals, tenor vocals), Leon Hughes (tenor vocals), Cornell Gunter (tenor vocals), Will “Dub” Jones (bass vocals), and Young Jessie (tenor vocals). Note that Bobby Nunn and Leon Hughes ended their membership in 1957, while Cornell Gunter, Will “Dub” Jones, and Young Jessie started in 1957.
- One by One (1960): Members active in 1960 included Billy Guy, Carl Gardner, Cornell Gunter, Will “Dub” Jones, Sonny Forriest (guitar), and Adolph Jacobs had left by 1959. Leon Hughes, Bobby Nunn, and Young Jessie were no longer members.
- Coast Along With The Coasters (1962): In 1962 the members were Billy Guy, Carl Gardner, Cornell Gunter (until 1961, so not 1962), Will “Dub” Jones (until 1967), Earl Carroll (starting 1961), Sonny Forriest (until 1961), and Thomas Palmer (starting 1962). Thus, the 1962 line-up included Billy Guy, Carl Gardner, Will “Dub” Jones, Earl Carroll, and Thomas Palmer.
- On Broadway (1973): The 1973 album aligns with members Billy Guy (until 1973), Carl Gardner (until 2005), Earl Carroll (until 1979), Thomas Palmer, Ronnie Bright (starting 1968), Vernon Harrell (until 1967, so not 1973), and Jimmy Norman (starting 1973). Therefore, members in 1973 were Billy Guy, Carl Gardner, Earl Carroll, Thomas Palmer, Ronnie Bright, and Jimmy Norman.
- Coasting (1979): For 1979, members included Carl Gardner, Earl Carroll (until 1979), Thomas Palmer, Ronnie Bright, and Jimmy Norman (until 1978, then again from 1980). Earl Carroll left in 1979, and Jimmy Norman was absent that year. So the line-up likely included Carl Gardner, Earl Carroll, Thomas Palmer, and Ronnie Bright.
- Down (2021) and Resting on the Beach (2021): No members are listed as active in 2021, as the latest end dates are 2015 for Eddie Whitfield and 2011 for Thomas Palmer and Carl Gardner, Jr. The band is noted as active from 1955 to present, but no members without an end date are listed. Thus, the line-ups for these albums cannot be determined from the member data.
These line-up snapshots show the changes in membership across the band’s recorded output, reflecting the data from MusicBrainz as of the 2026-10-09 retrieval.
