The Mamas & the Papas had five members: John Phillips, Michelle Phillips, Denny Doherty and Cass Elliot, the classic quartet, plus Jill Gibson, who briefly replaced Michelle Phillips in 1966. The folk rock vocal group formed in New York City and recorded and performed from 1965 to 1968, with a brief reunion in 1971 and a final reunion performance in 1998.
John Phillips was the group’s songwriter and leader and arranged the vocal harmonies that defined its sound. The group released five studio albums and 17 singles, six of which reached the Billboard top 10, and it was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998. Here is each member and their time in the group.
John Phillips – Vocals, Guitars (1965–1968, 1971, 1998)
John Phillips, formerly of the Journeymen, founded the group with his wife Michelle Phillips and Denny Doherty. He wrote the songs, led the group and arranged its harmonies, adapting folk music to the beat style of the early 1960s. He returned for the 1971 reunion and the 1998 Hall of Fame performance. He died in 2001.
Michelle Phillips – Vocals, Tambourine (1965–1966, 1966–1968, 1971, 1998)
Michelle Phillips was a founding member. In 1966 she was briefly replaced by Jill Gibson, then reinstated later that year, which is why her membership shows two spells in 1966. She took part in the 1971 reunion and the 1998 induction performance.
Denny Doherty – Vocals (1965–1968, 1971, 1998)
Canadian singer Denny Doherty, formerly of the Mugwumps, was the group’s only non-American member. He was there from the formation to the 1968 breakup and returned in 1971 and 1998. He died in 2007.
Cass Elliot – Vocals (1965–1968, 1971)
Cass Elliot, Doherty’s bandmate in the Mugwumps, was the last of the original four to join. She sang with the group until 1968 and on the 1971 reunion album People Like Us. She died in 1974; at the 1998 Hall of Fame ceremony her daughter Owen filled in for her.
Jill Gibson – Vocals (1966)
Jill Gibson, a visual artist and singer-songwriter who had recorded with Jan and Dean, was hired to replace Michelle Phillips in 1966. She was introduced to the band by producer Lou Adler and performed with them in concerts including Forest Hills in New York City, Denver and Phoenix before Michelle Phillips returned.
