Hazelnuts: Nutrition, 20 Benefits, Side Effects & How to Eat Them

Hazelnuts are delicious, nutrient-dense nuts that offer a wide range of health benefits when incorporated into your diet. Whether enjoyed raw, roasted, or as part of various recipes, they are a versatile snack that can boost your overall well-being.

Ingredients

  • Raw hazelnuts — 1 cup (about 140 grams)
  • Optional: sea salt — 1/2 teaspoon
  • Optional: honey or maple syrup — 1 tablespoon

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Spread the raw hazelnuts evenly on the prepared baking sheet.
  3. Roast the hazelnuts for 10-12 minutes, shaking the pan halfway through, until they are fragrant and lightly browned.
  4. Remove from the oven and let them cool for about 10 minutes.
  5. If desired, rub the cooled hazelnuts with a clean kitchen towel to remove the skins. Some skins may remain, which is normal.
  6. Transfer the hazelnuts to a bowl. If you like, sprinkle with sea salt or drizzle with honey or maple syrup for extra flavor. Toss to combine.
  7. Store the prepared hazelnuts in an airtight container at room temperature for up to two weeks or in the refrigerator for longer freshness.

Tips

  • For roasted hazelnuts with skins removed, roasting helps loosen the skins, but rubbing them in a towel after roasting makes the process easier. Alternatively, blanching in boiling water for a minute before roasting can loosen skins further.
  • Store hazelnuts in an airtight container in a cool, dark place to prevent them from becoming rancid. For longer storage, keep them in the refrigerator or freezer.
  • If you prefer a sweeter flavor, toss roasted hazelnuts with a bit of honey or maple syrup immediately after roasting while still warm.
  • Hazelnuts can be chopped and added to salads, yogurt, baked goods, or blended into spreads like nut butter for added versatility.

Serving Suggestions

Enjoy hazelnuts as a standalone snack, sprinkle them over oatmeal or yogurt, incorporate them into baked goods like cookies and muffins, or blend into smoothies for an extra nutritional boost. Their rich, nutty flavor complements both sweet and savory dishes.
