How to Change Main Display in Windows 10 Easily

Switching your main display in Windows 10 is a handy way to customize your workspace, especially if you use multiple monitors. Whether you’re setting up for gaming, work, or general multitasking, designating which screen is your primary display allows you to choose where your taskbar, start menu, and default apps appear. This guide walks you through the simple steps to change your main display, ensuring a smooth and efficient setup for your needs. Before you begin, make sure all your monitors are properly connected and powered on. If you’re using multiple displays, verify that Windows recognizes all of them correctly. Having your monitors connected and detected simplifies the process and prevents potential issues during setup.

What You’ll Need

  • A Windows 10 computer with multiple monitors connected and functioning
  • Administrative access to your Windows account
  • Updated graphics drivers (recommended but not mandatory)

Step-by-Step

  1. Right-click on an empty space on your desktop and select Display settings from the context menu. Alternatively, press Windows key + I to open Settings, then navigate to System > Display.
  2. In the Display settings window, you will see a visual layout of your connected monitors labeled with numbers (1, 2, etc.). If you don’t see all monitors, click Detect to force Windows to recognize any connected displays.
  3. Select the monitor you want to set as the main display by clicking on its icon in the diagram. The selected monitor will be highlighted.
  4. Scroll down to find the checkbox labeled Make this my main display. Click this checkbox. If it’s greyed out, ensure that the selected monitor is properly connected and recognized by Windows.
  5. Once checked, your selected monitor will become the primary display. Windows will automatically move the taskbar, start menu, and default apps to this screen.
  6. Click Apply to save your changes. Your primary display should now be updated immediately.
  7. Test the setup by opening an app or moving your mouse cursor to the new main display to confirm it’s functioning as expected.
