How to Clear Cache on Windows 10 Laptop for Better Performance

Over time, your Windows 10 laptop can accumulate cache files that slow down your system, cause browser issues, or lead to storage problems. Clearing cache regularly helps improve performance, frees up disk space, and resolves common glitches. Before starting, ensure you have administrator access on your laptop and have closed all running applications to prevent any conflicts during the process. This guide walks you through simple, effective steps to clear different types of cache on your Windows 10 device, whether it’s browser cache, system cache, or temporary files.

What You’ll Need

  • Windows 10 laptop with administrator rights
  • Internet connection (for browser cache clearing)
  • Optional: Backup important data (recommended before major cleanup)

Step-by-Step

  1. Start by opening the Windows Search bar. Click on the magnifying glass icon or press Windows key + S.
  2. Type “Disk Cleanup” in the search bar and select the Disk Cleanup app from the results.
  3. When Disk Cleanup opens, choose the drive you want to clean (usually C:) and click OK.
  4. Wait for Windows to calculate the amount of space you can free up. Once the list appears, check boxes next to types of files you want to delete, such as Temporary files, Thumbnails, and Recycle Bin.
  5. Click OK, then confirm by clicking “Delete Files”. Windows will proceed to delete the selected cache and temporary files.
  6. Next, clear your browser cache. Open your preferred browser (e.g., Chrome, Edge, Firefox).
  7. For Microsoft Edge: Click the three dots in the top right corner, select “Settings”, then “Privacy, search, and services”.
  8. Scroll down to “Clear browsing data” and click it. Choose a time range (select “All time” for a complete clear), check “Cached images and files”, then click “Clear now”.
  9. For Google Chrome: Click the three dots in the top right, go to “More tools” > “Clear browsing data”.
  10. Select “All time” as the time range, check “Cached images and files”, then click “Clear data”.
  11. Similarly, for Firefox: Click the menu button, select “Settings” > “Privacy & Security”.
  12. Under “Cookies and Site Data”, click “Clear Data”, check “Cached Web Content”, then click “Clear”.
  13. Clear system cache by resetting Windows Store cache. Press Windows key + R to open the Run dialog.
  14. Type “wsreset.exe” and press Enter. A blank Command Prompt window will appear, and after a few moments, the Microsoft Store will open, indicating cache reset is complete.
  15. Finally, clear the icon cache: open File Explorer, go to C:\
