Fix Set Time Zone Automatically Greyed Out in Windows 11

Fix Set Time Zone Automatically Greyed Out in Windows 11

Having the ‘Set time zone automatically’ option greyed out in Windows 11 can be frustrating, especially when you need your device to sync correctly with your local time. This issue often prevents users from adjusting their time zone manually or enabling automatic updates, leading to potential confusion with scheduled tasks, calendar appointments, or software that relies on accurate system time. Fortunately, resolving this problem is usually straightforward, involving a few settings adjustments or registry tweaks. Before starting, ensure your Windows 11 system is up to date, as updates often fix bugs and improve system stability. Additionally, you’ll need administrator privileges to make some changes, so be prepared to sign in with an admin account.

What You’ll Need

  • Admin access to your Windows 11 device
  • An active internet connection (for updates and troubleshooting)
  • Optional: Windows PowerShell or Command Prompt for advanced fixes

Step-by-Step

  1. Open Settings
  2. Click on the Start menu and select the Settings icon (gear symbol), or press Windows + I to open Settings directly.
  3. Navigate to Time & Language
  4. In the Settings window, click on Time & Language from the sidebar menu.
  5. Access Date & Time Settings
  6. Scroll down and click on Date & Time.
  7. Check the Automatic Settings
  8. Ensure that the toggle for Set time zone automatically is not greyed out. If it is, continue with the next steps.
  9. Disable Group Policy Restrictions
  10. Press Windows + R to open the Run dialog box. Type gpedit.msc and press Enter to launch the Local Group Policy Editor. (Note: This is available in Windows 11 Pro and Enterprise editions; Home editions require registry editing.)
  11. Navigate to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Date and Time.
  12. Find the policy named Allow Windows to automatically set the time zone.
  13. Double-click on it and set it to Not Configured or Disabled.
