How to Fix 'We Can't Install Some Updates' Error in Windows

Encountering the message “We can’t install some updates because other updates are in progress” can be frustrating, especially when you’re eager to keep your Windows system secure and up-to-date. This guide provides clear, step-by-step instructions to resolve this common Windows update issue efficiently. Before starting, ensure your device is connected to the internet and has sufficient power, especially if you’re on a laptop. Sometimes, simply restarting your computer can resolve the issue, but if not, follow the detailed steps below to manually fix the problem and get your updates installed successfully.

What You’ll Need

  • A Windows PC or laptop running Windows 10 or Windows 11
  • Administrator access to your device
  • Stable internet connection
  • Optional: A backup of your important files (recommended before performing troubleshooting steps)

Step-by-Step

  1. Restart Your Computer: Sometimes, a simple reboot clears the update in-progress status. Save your work, close all applications, and restart your PC. After restarting, try to update again. If the problem persists, proceed to the next step.
  2. Run the Windows Update Troubleshooter: Windows has a built-in tool to diagnose and fix update issues.
    • Open Settings (Press Windows key + I).
    • Navigate to Update & Security > Troubleshoot.
    • Select Additional troubleshooters.
    • Click on Windows Update and then Run the troubleshooter.
    • Follow on-screen instructions and apply recommended fixes.
  3. Stop the Windows Update Service: If the troubleshooter doesn’t resolve the issue, manually stop the update service.
    • Press Windows key + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
    • Scroll down to Windows Update.
    • Right-click and select Stop.
  4. Delete the SoftwareDistribution Folder: This folder stores temporary files for Windows updates.
