How to Install Windows 10 on Mac: Step-by-Step Guide

Installing Windows 10 on a Mac can greatly expand your device’s capabilities, allowing you to run Windows-only applications, games, or testing environments without needing a separate PC. This process involves creating a dual-boot setup, enabling your Mac to run either macOS or Windows 10 at startup. Before you begin, ensure your Mac meets the necessary hardware requirements and has sufficient storage space. You will also need a valid Windows 10 license, a USB drive for installation media, and some familiarity with system setup procedures. Follow this comprehensive step-by-step guide to successfully install Windows 10 on your Mac.

What You’ll Need

  • A compatible Mac (preferably an Intel-based Mac for Boot Camp)
  • At least 64GB of free storage space (more recommended for updates and files)
  • A valid Windows 10 ISO file (download from Microsoft)
  • A USB flash drive with at least 8GB of capacity
  • Backup of your Mac data (to prevent data loss)
  • Latest version of macOS and Boot Camp Assistant

Step-by-Step

  1. Backup Your Data: Before starting, back up your Mac using Time Machine or another backup method to prevent data loss during the installation process.
  2. Download Windows 10 ISO: Visit the official Microsoft website and download the Windows 10 ISO file. Save it to a known location on your Mac.
  3. Prepare USB Bootable Drive: Insert your USB flash drive. Open Boot Camp Assistant (found in Applications > Utilities), and follow the prompts to create a bootable Windows installer. Select the Windows ISO you downloaded and choose the USB drive as the destination. Boot Camp will format the USB drive and copy the necessary files.
  4. Partition Your Disk: In Boot Camp Assistant, you’ll be prompted to partition your disk. Decide how much space to allocate for Windows (at least 64GB recommended). The assistant will create a new partition for Windows while keeping macOS intact.
  5. Begin Windows Installation: Once the partition is ready, Boot Camp will restart your Mac and boot from the USB installer. Follow the on-screen prompts to begin installing Windows 10. Choose the partition labeled
