Set Snagit as Default Print Screen on Windows 11 Easily

Capturing screenshots quickly and efficiently is essential for many Windows 11 users, whether for work, tutorials, or personal use. If you’re a dedicated Snagit user and want to streamline your workflow, setting Snagit to be the default application when you press the Print Screen key can save you time and effort. This guide walks you through the process of making Snagit your default print screen tool on Windows 11, ensuring that every time you press the Print Screen key, Snagit launches and captures your screen exactly how you want. Before starting, make sure you have Snagit installed and activated on your Windows 11 device. If you haven’t installed Snagit yet, visit the TechSmith website to download and set up the latest version. Once ready, follow these straightforward steps to set Snagit as your default print screen application.

What You’ll Need

  • A Windows 11 PC
  • Snagit installed and activated
  • Administrative privileges on your PC (to change system settings)
  • Basic familiarity with Windows Settings and Taskbar

Step-by-Step

  1. Open the Snagit application on your Windows 11 device. Ensure that it is fully installed and activated.
  2. Configure your preferred capture settings within Snagit, such as capture hotkeys, output formats, and save locations. This ensures Snagit behaves exactly as you want when launched.
  3. Press the Windows key + R to open the Run dialog box. Type “regedit” and press Enter to launch the Registry Editor. Confirm any User Account Control prompts.
  4. In the Registry Editor, navigate to the following path:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced
  5. Look for the value named “DisabledHotkeys”. If it exists, double-click it; if not, right-click on the right pane, select New > String Value, and name it “DisabledHotkeys”.
  6. In the value data box, add the hotkey string for Print Screen, which is “P”. If other hotkeys are listed, ensure only “P” is present or add it accordingly. This step disables the default Windows print screen behavior to allow Snagit to take over.
  7. Next, create or modify a registry key to associate the Print Screen key with Snagit. Navigate to:
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SystemFileAssociations\image\shell
  8. Right-click on “shell” and select New > Key. Name it “Snagit Capture”.
  9. Within “Snagit Capture”, create a new key called “command”. Set its default value to the path of Snagit’s executable file, typically something like:
