How to Restore Windows 11 to Factory Settings

Restoring Windows 11 to its factory settings is a useful process when your device is running slowly, experiencing persistent errors, or you want to erase all personal data before selling or giving it away. This process essentially reinstalls the operating system, returning your PC to its original state as it was when you first unboxed it. Before proceeding, ensure you back up any important files or data, as the reset will erase everything on your device. Additionally, make sure your device is plugged into a power source to prevent interruptions during the reset process.

What You’ll Need

  • A Windows 11 PC with administrator access
  • Stable internet connection (optional, for downloading updates)
  • Backup of important files (recommended)

Step-by-Step

  1. Open the Settings app by clicking the Start menu and selecting the gear icon, or press Windows key + I on your keyboard.
  2. Navigate to the System tab in the left sidebar.
  3. Scroll down and click on Recovery.
  4. Under the Reset this PC section, click on Reset PC.
  5. A new window will appear with options. Choose Remove everything to ensure a complete reset, including all personal files, apps, and settings.
  6. Next, you’ll be prompted to select how you want to reinstall Windows: Cloud download or Local reinstall. Choose the option that suits your needs. Cloud download downloads a fresh copy from Microsoft servers, while local reinstall uses files stored on your device.
  7. Follow the on-screen instructions. You may be asked to confirm your choices and to select additional options like cleaning the drive or just removing files.
  8. Once confirmed, the reset process will begin. Your PC will restart several times during this process, which can take anywhere from 20 minutes to over an hour depending on your hardware and the options selected.
  9. After completion, Windows 11 will start fresh, guiding you through the initial setup process.
