How to Choose
When selecting an interview microphone, consider the environment you’ll be recording in—indoor or outdoor—as this impacts the type of mic needed. Directionality is crucial; cardioid and supercardioid microphones help isolate voices and reduce background noise, while omnidirectional mics capture a more natural room sound. Compatibility with your recording device, budget, and whether you need portability or professional-grade sound should also influence your decision. Lastly, assess the microphone’s durability and whether additional accessories like windscreens or shock mounts are necessary for your setup.
Frequently Asked Questions
- What is the best microphone for outdoor interviews? The Sennheiser MKE 600 or shotgun microphones like the Rode NTG series are excellent choices due to their focus and noise rejection capabilities.
- Do I need an external recorder for interview microphones? Not always; some microphones, like USB or built-in camera mics, can connect directly to your device. However, external recorders often provide higher sound quality and better control.
- Are lavalier microphones suitable for all interviews? Lavalier mics are great for discreet, hands-free interviews but can pick up clothing noise if not properly positioned. They work best in controlled environments.
- How important is microphone polar pattern? Very important: it determines how much of the surrounding sound is captured. Cardioid patterns focus on the subject, reducing background noise, which is ideal for interviews.
- Can I use a gaming or studio microphone for interviews? Some gaming or studio mics, like the Blue Snowball or Audio-Technica AT2020, can work for interviews if they connect to your device and suit your environment, but they may lack the directional control needed in noisy settings.
