As of now, there has been no official announcement confirming a second season of Netflix’s anime series Great Pretender. Fans of the series are eager to know if the story will continue, but the current status remains uncertain due to the lack of official confirmation from the production team or Netflix itself.
Background and Origin of Great Pretender
Great Pretender is a Japanese anime series produced by Wit Studio, renowned for its vibrant animation style and engaging storytelling. It first premiered on Netflix in June 2020 and quickly gained popularity among anime enthusiasts worldwide. The series is inspired by real-life con artists and explores themes of deception, redemption, and adventure through a colorful cast of characters.
What Is Known About the Series’ Future?
Despite the series’ success and positive reception, there has been no official word from Wit Studio or Netflix about a renewal or additional seasons. The creators have not provided any hints or statements indicating plans for a continuation. This silence has left fans speculating for months, with many hoping that the show’s unique storytelling and vibrant visuals will lead to a new installment.
Why No Official Announcement Yet?
Several factors could explain the absence of news about a second season:
- Production Decisions: Developing a new season requires significant resources, planning, and funding. Wit Studio may be evaluating whether a continuation aligns with their current projects.
- Story Completion: The first season covers a complete arc, and the creators might want to see how viewers respond before committing to more episodes.
- Netflix’s Strategy: As a streaming platform, Netflix often waits to gauge audience engagement and demand before greenlighting new seasons of anime.
- Market Conditions: External factors such as global events and industry trends can impact the timing of new productions.

Great Pretender has been praised for its animation quality, storytelling, and soundtrack. It stands out among Netflix anime for its unique art style and mature themes. The series has cultivated a dedicated fanbase, many of whom are actively campaigning for a second season. Its success has also helped boost Netflix’s reputation as a platform investing in original anime content.

Comparisons with Other Netflix Anime Series
Netflix has invested heavily in original anime, producing series like Castlevania, Devilman Crybaby, and B: The Beginning. Many of these series have received multiple seasons, which sets a precedent for continued content. However, the success of each series depends on various factors, including audience reception and production costs. Great Pretender, with its unique style, could follow a similar path if demand remains high.
What Are the Chances of a New Season?
While no official confirmation exists, the widespread enthusiasm among fans and the series’ popularity suggest a possibility of renewal. Industry analysts often point out that Netflix tends to renew successful shows, especially those with a dedicated fanbase and positive reviews. Nonetheless, until Wit Studio or Netflix makes an announcement, the future of Great Pretender remains speculative.
