Lychee Tea: 20 Benefits, Side Effects, Dosage & How to Make It

Lychee tea is a refreshing beverage that combines the sweet, floral flavor of fresh lychee fruit with the calming qualities of brewed tea. Rich in antioxidants and vitamins, this drink not only delights the senses but also offers numerous health benefits when enjoyed regularly. Whether served hot or cold, lychee tea is a versatile addition to your wellness routine.

Ingredients

  • Fresh lychee fruit – 1 cup (about 10-12 peeled lychees)
  • Black tea leaves or tea bags – 2 teaspoons or 2 bags
  • Honey or agave syrup (optional) – 1-2 tablespoons
  • Fresh mint leaves (optional) – 4-6 leaves
  • Water – 2 cups
  • Ice cubes (for cold serving) – as needed

Instructions

  1. Prepare the lychee: Peel the lychee fruits carefully, removing the skin and seed. Set aside about 10 peeled lychees for the tea.
  2. Boil water: In a small pot, bring 2 cups of water to a boil. Once boiling, remove from heat.
  3. Steep the tea: Add the black tea leaves or tea bags to the hot water. Cover and let steep for 3-5 minutes, depending on your desired strength.
  4. Blend the lychee: While the tea is steeping, place the peeled lychees in a blender or food processor. Blend until smooth, adding a tablespoon of water if needed to facilitate blending.
  5. Combine ingredients: Strain the brewed tea into a heatproof pitcher. Add the lychee puree to the tea and stir well to combine.
  6. Sweeten (optional): Add honey or agave syrup to taste, stirring until fully dissolved.
  7. Serve hot or cold: For hot tea, pour into cups and garnish with mint leaves if desired. For cold lychee tea, let it cool to room temperature, then refrigerate for at least 30 minutes. Serve over ice cubes.
  8. Garnish and enjoy: Add fresh lychee or mint leaves as garnish before serving for an extra touch of flavor and presentation.

Tips

  • Substitutions: You can substitute honey with other sweeteners like stevia or maple syrup based on your preference.
  • Storage: Store leftover lychee tea in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours. Stir well before serving, as ingredients may settle.
  • Flavor variations: Add a splash of lemon juice or a few slices of fresh ginger during steeping for a different flavor profile.
  • Common mistakes: Avoid over-steeping the tea, which can result in a bitter taste. Also, ensure the lychee is peeled thoroughly to prevent any bitterness from the skin.

Serving Suggestions

Lychee tea can be served hot for a comforting beverage or chilled as a revitalizing summer drink. Garnish with fresh mint, lychee pieces, or a slice of lemon for added visual appeal and flavor. It pairs wonderfully with light snacks or Asian-inspired dishes, making it an excellent choice for gatherings or a personal wellness boost.
