Neem Tea: 20 Benefits, Side Effects, Dosage & How to Make It

Neem tea is an herbal infusion made from the leaves of the neem tree, renowned for its medicinal properties in traditional Ayurveda. Rich in antioxidants and antimicrobial compounds, it offers a natural way to boost immunity, improve skin health, and support overall wellness. Understanding how to prepare and consume neem tea responsibly can help you harness its numerous health benefits safely.

Ingredients

  • Fresh neem leaves – 10-15 leaves (or 1-2 teaspoons dried neem leaves)
  • Water – 2 cups (about 500 ml)
  • Optional: honey or lemon for flavor – 1 teaspoon or a squeeze

Instructions

  1. Gather fresh neem leaves, ensuring they are clean and free from dirt or pests. If using dried leaves, measure out approximately 1-2 teaspoons.
  2. Bring 2 cups of water to a boil in a saucepan over medium heat.
  3. Add the neem leaves to the boiling water. If using fresh leaves, tear them slightly to release more of their beneficial compounds.
  4. Reduce the heat and let the mixture simmer for about 10-15 minutes, allowing the water to extract the medicinal properties from the leaves.
  5. Remove the saucepan from heat and strain the tea into a cup using a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth to remove the leaves.
  6. Optional: Add a teaspoon of honey or a squeeze of lemon to enhance the flavor, especially if the tea tastes bitter.
  7. Allow the tea to cool slightly before drinking. Consume warm or at room temperature.

Tips

  • Start with small quantities—about half a cup—to assess your body’s response, especially if you are new to neem tea.
  • If fresh neem leaves are unavailable, dried leaves or neem capsules can be used, but adjust the quantities accordingly.
  • Store any leftover neem tea in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours. Reheat gently before drinking.
  • Beware of overconsumption; drinking neem tea excessively can lead to side effects like stomach upset or allergic reactions. Limit intake to 1-2 cups per day.

Serving Suggestions

Neem tea can be enjoyed as a morning detox or a soothing evening beverage. Pair it with a light snack or enjoy it alone for its health benefits. For added flavor, some people like to infuse the tea with a cinnamon stick or ginger slices during simmering.
