Neem Water: 20 Benefits, Side Effects, Uses & How to Make It

Neem water is a traditional herbal remedy derived from the leaves of the neem tree, renowned for its numerous health and skincare benefits. Making neem water at home is simple and offers a natural way to boost your wellness routine.

Ingredients

  • Fresh neem leaves – 1 cup (about 15-20 leaves)
  • Water – 4 cups (1 liter)
  • Optional: a few drops of lemon juice or honey for taste

Instructions

  1. Prepare the neem leaves: Rinse the fresh neem leaves thoroughly under running water to remove dirt and impurities.
  2. Boil the water: Pour 4 cups of water into a pot and bring it to a boil over medium heat.
  3. Add neem leaves: Once the water boils, add the cleaned neem leaves to the boiling water.
  4. Simmer: Reduce the heat and let the mixture simmer for about 15-20 minutes. The water will take on a slightly bitter, greenish hue.
  5. Cool and strain: Remove the pot from heat and let the neem water cool to room temperature. Strain the liquid through a fine sieve or cloth to remove all leaves and debris.
  6. Optional flavoring: If desired, add a few drops of lemon juice or honey to improve taste.
  7. Store: Transfer the neem water into a clean bottle or jar. Keep it refrigerated and use within 2-3 days for optimal freshness.

Tips

  • Substitutions: Dried neem leaves can be used if fresh ones are unavailable; use about half the quantity as dried leaves are more concentrated.
  • Storage: Keep neem water in an airtight container in the refrigerator to prevent spoilage and maintain potency.
  • Common mistakes: Avoid boiling neem leaves for too long as it can intensify bitterness and reduce the beneficial properties.
  • Usage: Always perform a patch test before applying neem water topically to check for allergic reactions.

Serving Suggestions

Neem water can be consumed directly as a herbal tonic, used as a facial rinse for skin health, or added to baths for detoxification. Incorporate it into your daily routine for best results.
