Nigella Seed Tea: Benefits, Side Effects, How to Make It & More

Nigella seed tea is a traditional herbal infusion made from the seeds of Nigella sativa, also known as black cumin. Renowned for its numerous health benefits, this aromatic tea can support digestion, boost immunity, and reduce inflammation when prepared correctly. Whether you’re seeking a natural remedy or a calming beverage, making Nigella seed tea at home is simple and rewarding.

Ingredients

  • 1 teaspoon Nigella seeds (about 2 grams)
  • 2 cups (480 ml) of water
  • Optional: honey or lemon for flavor
  • Optional: a small piece of fresh ginger or cinnamon stick for added flavor

Instructions

  1. Measure out 1 teaspoon of Nigella seeds and set aside.
  2. Pour 2 cups of water into a small saucepan and bring it to a boil over medium-high heat.
  3. Once boiling, add the Nigella seeds to the water. If desired, include a small piece of fresh ginger or a cinnamon stick for additional flavor.
  4. Reduce the heat to low and let the mixture simmer uncovered for about 10 minutes. This allows the seeds’ oils and compounds to infuse into the water.
  5. After simmering, remove the saucepan from heat. Cover and let it steep for an additional 5 minutes to enhance the infusion.
  6. Strain the tea into a mug using a fine mesh strainer or tea infuser. Discard the seeds and any added spices.
  7. Sweeten with honey or add a squeeze of lemon if desired. Stir well and enjoy warm.

Tips

  • For a milder flavor, reduce the simmering time or use fewer seeds. Conversely, increase the seeds for a stronger infusion.
  • Store leftover Nigella seeds in an airtight container in a cool, dark place to maintain freshness for future use.
  • If you prefer a quicker method, you can also crush the seeds slightly before adding them to boiling water to release more flavor.
  • Be cautious with the amount of seeds; excessive consumption may cause digestive discomfort or allergic reactions in sensitive individuals.

Serving Suggestions

Enjoy Nigella seed tea as a soothing morning or evening beverage. It pairs well with a light snack or can be sipped throughout the day to support overall wellness. For added benefits, combine with other herbal teas like chamomile or ginger tea.
