Oat water is a simple, nutritious beverage made by soaking oats in water, resulting in a mild, creamy liquid packed with health benefits. It’s a versatile drink that can boost skin health, aid digestion, and serve as a dairy-free alternative in recipes.
Ingredients
- 1 cup rolled oats (unsweetened, gluten-free if needed)
- 4 cups filtered water
- Optional: 1 teaspoon honey or maple syrup for sweetness
- Optional: a pinch of cinnamon or vanilla extract for flavor
Instructions
- Rinse the oats thoroughly under cold water to remove any dust or debris.
- In a blender, combine the rinsed oats and 4 cups of filtered water. Add sweeteners or flavorings if desired.
- Blend on high speed for about 30-45 seconds until the oats are fully broken down and the mixture appears milky.
- Place a fine-mesh strainer or cheesecloth over a large bowl or jug. Pour the blended mixture through the strainer to separate the oat water from the oat pulp.
- Use a spoon or spatula to gently press the mixture, extracting as much liquid as possible. Discard the leftover pulp or save it for smoothies or baking.
- Transfer the strained oat water to a clean bottle or jar. Chill in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour before serving.
- Shake well before each use, as natural separation may occur.
Tips
- For a creamier texture, you can add a splash of plant-based milk like almond or coconut milk when blending.
- If you prefer a thinner consistency, add more water during blending or dilute the strained oat water with additional water before serving.
- Store oat water in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Shake or stir before use as separation occurs naturally.
- To enhance flavor, experiment with adding a few drops of vanilla extract, a pinch of cinnamon, or a sweetener of your choice during blending.
Serving Suggestions
Enjoy oat water as a refreshing drink on its own, or use it as a dairy-free base for smoothies and cereal. It can also be incorporated into baking recipes or used to hydrate oats and other grains for added nutritional value.
