Orange Juice: 20 Benefits, Side Effects, Nutrition & How to Make It

Freshly squeezed orange juice is a delicious and nutritious beverage that offers a wide array of health benefits. Making your own at home ensures maximum freshness and allows you to enjoy its natural sweetness without added sugars or preservatives.

Ingredients

  • 4 large oranges (preferably navel or Valencia) – approximately 1 to 1.5 cups of juice
  • Optional: a teaspoon of honey or agave syrup for sweetness
  • Optional: a few ice cubes for serving

Instructions

  1. Wash the oranges thoroughly under cold water to remove any dirt or pesticides. Use a vegetable brush if needed.
  2. Cut each orange in half crosswise using a sharp knife. If the oranges are large, you can also cut into quarters for easier juicing.
  3. Use a manual citrus juicer, electric juicer, or a fine-mesh strainer with a reamer to extract the juice. Press or twist the orange halves firmly to release as much juice as possible.
  4. Pour the freshly squeezed juice through a fine-mesh sieve into a clean pitcher to remove pulp and seeds, if you prefer a smoother juice.
  5. If desired, stir in a teaspoon of honey or agave syrup to enhance sweetness. Mix well.
  6. Serve immediately over ice for a refreshing drink or store in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours. Shake or stir before serving if stored.

Tips

  • Choose ripe, juicy oranges for the best flavor and maximum yield. Oranges that feel heavy for their size are usually juicier.
  • If you don’t have a juicer, you can use a fork and a bowl: insert the fork into the orange half and twist while squeezing to extract the juice manually.
  • To store leftover juice, keep it in a sealed container in the refrigerator and consume within 24 hours to preserve freshness and nutrients.
  • For a pulp-free juice, strain the liquid through a fine sieve or cheesecloth. If you enjoy pulp, skip this step.

Serving Suggestions

Enjoy your homemade orange juice as a revitalizing breakfast beverage, a midday refresher, or as a base for smoothies and cocktails. Pair it with whole-grain toast, yogurt, or fresh fruit for a balanced start to your day.
