Peanut Milk: Benefits, Nutrition, Side Effects & How to Make It

Peanut milk is a creamy, nutritious plant-based alternative to dairy milk, made by blending roasted peanuts with water. It’s a versatile beverage packed with health benefits and can be easily prepared at home for a fresh, additive-free drink.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup raw or roasted peanuts (unsalted)
  • 4 cups filtered water
  • Optional sweeteners: 1-2 tablespoons honey, maple syrup, or agave syrup
  • Optional flavorings: 1 teaspoon vanilla extract or a pinch of cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Peanuts: If using raw peanuts, soak them in water for 4-6 hours or overnight to soften. Drain and rinse thoroughly. If using roasted peanuts, you can skip the soaking step.
  2. Blend the Mixture: In a high-speed blender, combine the soaked or roasted peanuts with 4 cups of filtered water. Add sweeteners or flavorings if desired. Blend on high for 1-2 minutes until the mixture is smooth and creamy.
  3. Strain the Milk: Place a nut milk bag, fine mesh strainer, or cheesecloth over a large bowl or pitcher. Pour the blended mixture through the strainer, gently pressing or squeezing to extract as much liquid as possible. The leftover pulp can be saved for baking or smoothies.
  4. Store and Chill: Transfer the strained peanut milk into a clean glass bottle or jar. Refrigerate for up to 3-4 days. Shake well before each use, as natural separation may occur.

Tips

  • Substitutions: Use roasted peanuts for a richer flavor, or try adding a handful of soaked almonds or cashews for a different nutty taste.
  • Sweeteners and Flavorings: Adjust the sweetness to your preference; honey and maple syrup work well, but you can also add a date or banana for natural sweetness.
  • Storage: Keep peanut milk refrigerated in an airtight container and consume within 3-4 days for freshness. Shake well before each use as it may naturally separate.
  • Common Mistakes: Not soaking raw peanuts long enough can result in a grainy texture. Also, skipping straining can leave gritty bits in your milk.

Serving Suggestions

Peanut milk can be enjoyed on its own as a refreshing beverage or used as a base for smoothies, coffee, and cereal. Its creamy texture makes it a great addition to baking recipes like pancakes or muffins, or poured over oatmeal for added flavor and nutrition.

Variations

Experiment with flavors by adding cocoa powder for a chocolate peanut milk, or blend in frozen bananas and a dash of cinnamon for a tasty breakfast drink. You can also make a savory version by adding a pinch of salt and herbs for a peanut-based sauce or dip.
