Featuring legendary acts like Repulsion and Windhand alongside rising stars, this event is a must-visit for fans of doom, sludge, death metal, and extreme music. Whether you’re a die-hard metalhead or a newcomer eager to experience the underground scene, this guide will help you understand why these bands are worth catching and how to choose your favorites for an unforgettable festival experience.
Repulsion
Hailing from San Francisco, Repulsion is widely regarded as pioneers of death metal and grindcore. Their seminal album, Horrified, released in 1989, is often credited as one of the first full-length death metal records, influencing countless bands that followed. Known for their relentless speed and raw intensity, Repulsion’s live shows are a brutal, visceral experience that captures the raw energy of early extreme metal. Catching them at Northwest Terror Fest offers a rare chance to see a band whose influence is woven into the very fabric of modern death metal.
Windhand
Virginia’s Windhand is a leading force in doom metal, blending heavy riffs with hazy, psychedelic atmospheres. Their 2018 album, Veil of Imagination, received critical acclaim for its lush soundscapes and emotional depth. Windhand’s live performances are characterized by their immersive, hypnotic quality, often featuring extended jams and a commanding presence from vocalist Dorthia Cottrell. Their appearance at the festival promises a soulful, slow-burn experience that contrasts beautifully with the festival’s more aggressive acts.
High on Fire
Led by guitarist and vocalist Matt Pike, High on Fire is renowned for their ferocious blend of stoner metal, thrash, and doom. Albums like Snakes for the Divine and Electric Messiah showcase their ability to craft heavy, groove-laden riffs that energize audiences. Their explosive live shows are legendary, often lasting over an hour of relentless energy. A performance by High on Fire at Northwest Terror Fest guarantees a high-octane set that will leave fans headbanging and craving more.
Yob
Oregon’s Yob is a titan of the doom scene, known for their expansive, atmospheric compositions that often stretch beyond the typical song length. Albums like Our Raw Heart demonstrate their mastery in creating soundscapes that are both crushing and introspective. Yob’s live shows are immersive, with guitarist Mike Scheidt leading the charge through sprawling, hypnotic riffs that resonate deeply. Their presence at the festival adds a layer of contemplative heaviness that balances the lineup.
Converge
Massachusetts-based Converge is a cornerstone of hardcore and metallic hardcore, combining ferocious aggression with complex, chaotic songwriting. Their 2017 album The Dusk in Us showcases their ability to blend melody with brutality seamlessly. Known for their intense, energetic live performances, Converge’s set will likely be a chaotic, cathartic experience that pushes the boundaries of extreme music.
Eyehategod
New Orleans’ Eyehategod is synonymous with sludge metal’s dirty, slow, and heavy sound. Their 2014 album, A History of Nomadic Behavior, exemplifies their dark, nihilistic approach to music. Their live shows are notorious for their raw, unfiltered energy and a sense of catharsis that resonates with fans of the genre. Seeing Eyehategod at Northwest Terror Fest is a must for fans craving the thick, oppressive sound that defines sludge metal.
Harms Way
Chicago’s Harms Way brings a hardcore-infused, metallic edge to the lineup, blending aggressive riffs with a modern, metallic sheen. Their 2020 album, Posthuman, pushes the boundaries of hardcore, incorporating industrial elements and complex rhythms. Their intense live performances are a brutal, high-energy experience that will appeal to fans of both hardcore and metal.
