Rheumatism Causes, Symptoms & Ayurvedic Treatment Explained

Rheumatism is a common condition characterized by chronic joint pain, stiffness, and inflammation that can significantly impact daily life. Understanding its causes and exploring Ayurvedic remedies offers a holistic approach to managing this persistent ailment effectively.

Ingredients

  • Turmeric powder – 1 teaspoon
  • Ginger root (fresh) – 1 inch piece
  • Ashwagandha powder – 1 teaspoon
  • Black pepper – 1/4 teaspoon
  • Raw honey – 1 tablespoon (optional)
  • Warm water – 1 cup
  • Sesame oil or mustard oil – 2 tablespoons
  • Fresh neem leaves – a handful (for decoction)
  • Fenugreek seeds – 1 teaspoon

Instructions

  1. Prepare the herbal decoction by boiling neem leaves and fenugreek seeds in 2 cups of water for about 15-20 minutes. Strain and set aside.
  2. In a separate bowl, mix turmeric powder, ginger (grated or crushed), ashwagandha powder, and black pepper. Add a small amount of warm water to form a smooth paste.
  3. Heat the sesame or mustard oil in a small pan until warm, but not smoking. Allow it to cool slightly.
  4. Add the herbal paste to the warm oil and stir well. This creates a medicated oil for massage.
  5. Use this oil to gently massage affected joints and muscles twice daily, preferably in the morning and before bedtime.
  6. Consume the prepared herbal decoction twice daily to help reduce inflammation and improve joint health.
  7. If desired, add a tablespoon of raw honey to the herbal decoction for enhanced anti-inflammatory benefits and improved taste.
  8. Maintain a balanced diet rich in anti-inflammatory foods, and avoid processed and sugary foods to support recovery.

Tips

  • Substitution: If fresh neem leaves are unavailable, use dried neem powder in the decoction, adjusting the quantity accordingly.
  • Storage: Store the medicated oil in a glass jar away from direct sunlight to preserve its efficacy.
  • Common Mistake: Avoid overheating the herbal oil, as excessive heat can diminish its medicinal properties.
  • Consistency: Regular application and consumption are key; skip doses only if advised by a healthcare provider.

Serving Suggestions

Complement your Ayurvedic treatment with gentle stretching exercises, adequate rest, and a balanced diet to enhance joint health and reduce symptoms of rheumatism. Always consult an Ayurvedic practitioner before starting any new herbal regimen to ensure it suits your individual needs and health condition.
