Rice Water: 20 Benefits, Side Effects, Uses & How to Make It

Rice water is a simple, natural remedy that has been used for centuries across various cultures for its skin, hair, and health benefits. This nourishing water, made from soaking or boiling rice, is packed with nutrients that can boost your beauty routine and overall wellness when used correctly.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup of rice (white, brown, jasmine, or any variety you prefer)
  • 2 to 3 cups of water (for soaking or boiling)
  • Optional: a few drops of essential oil (lavender, tea tree, etc.) for scent

Instructions

  1. Rinse the rice thoroughly under cold water to remove any dirt or impurities. Use about 1 cup of rice for a standard batch.
  2. Choose your method: soaking or boiling. For soaking, place the rinsed rice in a clean bowl and add 2-3 cups of water. For boiling, add rice to a pot with 2-3 cups of water.
  3. If soaking, let the rice sit at room temperature for 30 minutes to 1 hour, stirring occasionally. If boiling, cook the rice until it’s slightly overcooked, then strain out the rice, reserving the water.
  4. Once the rice has soaked or cooked, strain the water into a clean container. If you used the soaking method, you can use the water directly. If boiling, allow the water to cool slightly before straining.
  5. If desired, add a few drops of essential oil to the rice water for fragrance and additional skin benefits. Mix well.
  6. Transfer the rice water into a clean bottle or jar. Store it in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. Shake well before each use.

Tips

  • Substitutions: For a mild scent, skip the essential oils; for added benefits, try adding a few drops of rosemary or chamomile essential oil.
  • Storage: Keep rice water refrigerated and use within 5 days to prevent spoilage. You can also freeze it in ice cube trays for longer storage.
  • Common Mistakes: Avoid using hot water when storing rice water, as it can promote bacteria growth. Always let it cool before transferring to storage containers.
  • Enhancements: For extra nutrients, add a teaspoon of rice vinegar or a splash of aloe vera juice before storing.

Serving Suggestions

Rice water is versatile and can be used as a facial toner, hair rinse, or even ingested for health benefits. For skin, apply it with a cotton pad after cleansing or as a refreshing mist throughout the day. For hair, use it as a final rinse after shampooing to boost shine and strength. When consumed, drink a small glass (about 1/4 cup) daily to support digestion and hydration.
