Rose geranium oil is a beautifully fragrant essential oil known for its numerous health and skincare benefits. Making your own at home allows you to enjoy its natural properties while customizing its uses for your needs.
Ingredients
- Fresh rose geranium leaves – 2 cups (about 50 grams)
- Carrier oil (such as jojoba, sweet almond, or grapeseed oil) – 1 cup (240 ml)
- Glass jar with a tight-fitting lid – 1
- Optional: a few drops of vitamin E oil (as a preservative) – 5 drops
Instructions
- Gather fresh rose geranium leaves, ensuring they are free from dirt and pests. Rinse gently under cool water and pat dry with a clean towel.
- Chop the leaves into smaller pieces to increase surface area, which helps release their aromatic oils.
- Place the chopped leaves into the glass jar, filling it about halfway.
- Pour the carrier oil over the leaves until they are completely submerged. Leave about an inch of space at the top of the jar.
- If desired, add 5 drops of vitamin E oil to help preserve the oil and extend its shelf life.
- Seal the jar tightly and shake gently to mix the contents.
- Store the jar in a warm, dark place for 2 to 4 weeks. Shake the jar gently every 2-3 days to help release the essential oils from the leaves.
- After the infusion period, strain the oil through a fine mesh or cheesecloth into a clean container to remove the plant material.
- Transfer the finished rose geranium oil into a dark glass bottle for storage. Label it with the date.
- Store in a cool, dark place, and use within 6-12 months for optimal benefits.
Tips
- For a stronger scent, increase the amount of leaves or extend the infusion period by a week, ensuring the oil doesn’t become rancid.
- If fresh leaves are unavailable, dried rose geranium leaves can be used, but the infusion may take longer and yield a less intense aroma.
- Always use high-quality, pure carrier oils to ensure the best extraction and longevity of your rose geranium oil.
- Store your homemade oil in a dark glass bottle to protect it from light, which can degrade the essential oils over time.
Serving Suggestions
Rose geranium oil can be used in skincare routines, diffused for aromatherapy, or added to bathwater for relaxation. Always dilute essential oils before applying to skin and perform a patch test to check for sensitivities.
