Saffron Tea: Benefits, Side Effects, How to Make It & Dosage Guide

Saffron tea is a fragrant, vibrant beverage cherished for its unique flavor and numerous health benefits. Made by infusing high-quality saffron threads into hot water, this tea not only offers a soothing experience but also packs a powerful nutritional punch, making it a popular choice for wellness enthusiasts.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup (240 ml) water
  • pinch of saffron threads (about 10-15 threads)
  • 1 teaspoon honey or sweetener of choice (optional)
  • 1 slice of lemon (optional)

Instructions

  1. Bring the water to a gentle boil in a small saucepan or kettle.
  2. While the water heats, place the saffron threads in a small bowl or teapot.
  3. Pour a few tablespoons of hot water over the saffron threads to help release their color and aroma. Let it steep for about 5 minutes.
  4. Add the remaining hot water to the saffron-infused mixture. Cover and let it steep for an additional 5-7 minutes to maximize flavor and benefits.
  5. If desired, stir in honey or your preferred sweetener to taste. Add a slice of lemon for extra flavor and vitamin C.
  6. Strain the tea into a cup if you used whole saffron threads directly in the boiling water, or simply pour if using an infuser.
  7. Serve hot and enjoy the calming, health-boosting effects of saffron tea.

Tips

  • Use high-quality saffron for the best flavor and maximum health benefits. Cheaper saffron may lack potency.
  • Store saffron in an airtight container in a cool, dark place to preserve its aroma and color.
  • Avoid boiling saffron for too long, as high heat can diminish its delicate flavor and nutrients.
  • If you don’t have saffron, you can try turmeric as a substitute, but note that the flavor and health benefits will differ significantly.

Serving Suggestions

Enjoy saffron tea as a calming morning ritual or an evening relaxation drink. It pairs beautifully with light snacks like almonds or dried fruits. For an extra comforting experience, add a splash of milk or a dash of cinnamon.
