Sea Moss: 20 Benefits, Side Effects, Dosage & How to Take It

Sea moss, also known as Irish moss, has gained popularity as a superfood due to its impressive nutritional profile and potential health benefits. Incorporating sea moss into your routine can support immune health, digestion, and skin vitality, making it a versatile addition to your diet.

Ingredients

  • dried sea moss (Irish moss) – 1 ounce (about 28 grams)
  • filtered water – 4 cups (960 ml)
  • optional: lemon juice or honey for flavor – 1 teaspoon or to taste

Instructions

  1. Rinse the dried sea moss thoroughly under cold running water to remove any dirt, salt, or debris. Gently scrub with your hands to ensure cleanliness.
  2. Place the rinsed sea moss in a large bowl and cover it with 4 cups of filtered water. Allow it to soak at room temperature for 12-24 hours. During this time, it will expand and become soft and gelatinous.
  3. Once soaked, drain the sea moss and transfer it to a blender. Add a fresh 1-2 cups of filtered water for blending, depending on your desired consistency.
  4. Blend on high for 1-2 minutes until smooth and gel-like. If you prefer a thinner consistency, add more water gradually and blend again.
  5. Taste the gel and add lemon juice or honey if desired for flavor. Blend briefly to incorporate.
  6. Transfer the sea moss gel into a clean jar or airtight container. Store it in the refrigerator for up to 3 weeks.

Tips

  • Substitutions: You can add other flavorings like ginger or cinnamon during blending for variety.
  • Storage: Keep the gel in an airtight container in the fridge. Use a clean spoon each time to avoid contamination.
  • Common mistakes: Avoid soaking sea moss in hot water, which can degrade its nutrients. Also, ensure it’s thoroughly rinsed to remove salt and sand.
  • Usage: Sea moss gel can be added to smoothies, teas, soups, or used as a thickening agent in recipes.

Serving Suggestions

Incorporate your homemade sea moss gel into smoothies for a nutritious boost, add a spoonful to your morning tea or coffee, or use it as a base for vegan puddings. Its neutral flavor makes it versatile for both sweet and savory dishes, allowing you to enjoy its health benefits effortlessly.
