Sencha Tea: 20 Benefits, Side Effects, Dosage & How to Make It

Sencha Tea: 20 Benefits, Side Effects, Dosage & How to Make It

Sencha tea, a popular Japanese green tea, offers a refreshing taste along with numerous health benefits. Its delicate flavor and rich antioxidants make it a favorite for those seeking a natural boost to their wellness routine.

Ingredients

  • Sencha green tea leaves – 2 teaspoons (about 2 grams)
  • Filtered water – 1 cup (240 ml)

Instructions

  1. Heat the water: Bring filtered water to a temperature of about 160-170°F (70-75°C). Avoid boiling water, as it can scorch the delicate tea leaves and diminish flavor.
  2. Prepare the tea leaves: Place 2 teaspoons of sencha tea leaves into a teapot or infuser. Using a gaiwan or a small teapot works well for steeping.
  3. Pour the water: Once the water reaches the correct temperature, pour it over the tea leaves evenly.
  4. Steep: Allow the tea to steep for 1 to 2 minutes. For a milder flavor, steep closer to 1 minute; for a stronger taste, go up to 2 minutes.
  5. Strain and serve: Remove the tea leaves or infuser, pour the brewed tea into a cup, and enjoy immediately. Sencha can be steeped multiple times, increasing steeping time slightly with each infusion.

Tips

  • Use high-quality, fresh sencha leaves for the best flavor and maximum health benefits. Store unopened tea in a cool, dark place to preserve freshness.
  • Adjust water temperature and steeping time based on your taste preference. Cooler water and shorter steeping yield a more delicate flavor, while hotter water and longer steeping produce a stronger brew.
  • Don’t use boiling water, as it can cause bitterness and degrade antioxidants. Invest in a thermometer to get the perfect temperature.
  • For multiple infusions, increase steeping time by 30 seconds to 1 minute for each subsequent brew, and reuse the same leaves to extract more flavor and benefits.

Serving Suggestions

Sencha tea is best enjoyed plain to appreciate its natural flavor. It pairs well with light Japanese dishes like sushi, sashimi, or rice crackers. For a calming experience, serve it in a traditional Japanese teacup or a simple mug.
