Spinach Juice: 20 Benefits, Side Effects, Nutrition & How to Make It

Spinach juice is a vibrant, nutrient-packed beverage that offers numerous health benefits while being easy to prepare at home. Its rich iron content and antioxidants make it a great addition to a healthy diet, whether you’re looking to boost energy, improve digestion, or support your immune system.

Ingredients

  • 4 cups fresh spinach leaves, washed thoroughly
  • <1 large cucumber, peeled and chopped

<2 medium apples, cored and sliced (preferably organic)

    <1 lemon, peeled

<1-inch piece fresh ginger root, peeled

<1 cup filtered water (or more, as needed)

Instructions

  1. Prepare all ingredients: wash the spinach thoroughly to remove dirt and pesticides. Peel the cucumber, lemon, and ginger as indicated. Core and slice the apples.
  2. In a blender, combine the spinach, cucumber, apples, lemon, and ginger. Add 1 cup of filtered water to facilitate blending.
  3. Blend on high speed for about 30-60 seconds until the mixture is smooth and well combined. If the mixture is too thick, add additional water a little at a time and blend again.
  4. Place a fine-mesh sieve or cheesecloth over a large bowl or jug. Pour the blended mixture through the sieve, using a spoon or spatula to press the juice out while separating the pulp.
  5. Discard the pulp or save it for smoothies or baking. Transfer the strained spinach juice into a glass bottle or jar.
  6. Chill in the refrigerator for at least 15 minutes before serving, or enjoy immediately over ice for a refreshing drink.

Tips

  • Substitutions: You can replace apples with pears for a different sweetness or add a handful of celery for extra flavor and nutrients.
  • Storage: Spinach juice is best enjoyed fresh but can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours. Shake well before drinking as some separation may occur.
  • Common mistakes: Avoid over-blending the spinach alone, as it can turn bitter if overprocessed. Also, ensure all ingredients are washed thoroughly to reduce pesticide residues and dirt.
  • Adjust sweetness: If you prefer a sweeter juice, add a teaspoon of honey or a splash of natural fruit juice during blending.

Serving Suggestions

Serve your fresh spinach juice immediately for maximum nutrient retention. It pairs well with a light breakfast, as a revitalizing mid-morning snack, or as a healthy post-workout drink. You can also add a few ice cubes or a sprig of mint for extra freshness.
