Turmeric Water: 20 Benefits, Side Effects, Uses & How to Make It

Turmeric water is a simple, nourishing beverage made by infusing warm water with turmeric powder. Known for its potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, it offers numerous health benefits and can be easily incorporated into your daily routine.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups (480 ml) of filtered water
  • 1 teaspoon (5 grams) of turmeric powder
  • Black pepper (a pinch, optional but enhances absorption)Honey or lemon juice (for taste, optional)

Instructions

  1. Pour 2 cups of filtered water into a small saucepan and place it over medium heat.
  2. Once the water begins to warm, add 1 teaspoon of turmeric powder, stirring well to prevent clumping.
  3. If using, add a pinch of black pepper to the mixture. Black pepper contains piperine, which significantly boosts turmeric absorption.
  4. Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer and let it cook for about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  5. Remove from heat and strain the turmeric water into a mug or glass to remove any residual turmeric particles.
  6. Allow it to cool slightly before adding honey or lemon juice if desired for added flavor.
  7. Drink warm or at room temperature. It’s best consumed within 24 hours for maximum freshness and potency.

Tips

  • Substitutions: Use fresh grated turmeric root instead of powder if available, adjusting the quantity to about 1-2 teaspoons for a stronger flavor.
  • Storage: Store any leftover turmeric water in a sealed jar in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours. Shake well before reheating or drinking.
  • Common Mistakes: Avoid boiling the mixture aggressively or for too long, as high heat can degrade some of turmeric’s beneficial compounds. Also, don’t skip black pepper, as it enhances bioavailability.
  • Additional Enhancements: Add a pinch of cinnamon or ginger for extra flavor and health benefits.

Serving Suggestions

This turmeric water can be enjoyed as a morning detox drink, a soothing evening beverage, or a post-workout tonic. For an extra boost of antioxidants, consider blending it with a splash of coconut milk or adding a teaspoon of chia seeds for added fiber.
