For fans of W.A.S.P. and classic heavy metal, the news that Blackie Lawless will perform seated during the remaining 2023 European tour dates offers a unique concert experience. Whether you’re attending for the first time or a longtime supporter, understanding what this change means and how to make the most of it can enhance your concert experience. This article breaks down the details of Blackie Lawless’s seated performances, what to expect, and how to choose the best seats for your preferences.
1. Why Blackie Lawless Is Performing Seated in 2023
Blackie Lawless, the charismatic frontman of W.A.S.P., announced that due to health considerations and to ensure safety and comfort, he will perform seated during the remaining European dates of the tour. This decision was influenced by recent health updates, including concerns over vocal strain and physical stamina. Fans can still expect the same energetic performance, but from a seated position, which allows Lawless to conserve energy and deliver a powerful show with less physical strain. This change has been met with mixed reactions, but many appreciate the opportunity to see the legendary performer in a new light while prioritizing his health.
2. How the Seating Will Be Arranged at Venues
Each venue has adapted to accommodate Lawless’s seated performances differently. Larger arenas like the Ziggo Dome in Amsterdam and the Lanxess Arena in Cologne have designated specific sections for seated fans, often in front of the stage or in side balconies. Smaller clubs and theaters, such as the La Laiterie in Strasbourg, have reconfigured their seating arrangements to ensure fans are comfortably seated while maintaining good sightlines. It’s essential to check the specific venue layout when purchasing tickets, as some seats may be closer to the stage, offering an intimate experience, while others are more distant but still provide excellent views.
3. Benefits of Attending a Seated W.A.S.P. Show
Seated performances offer a different concert experience that can be more comfortable, especially for fans with mobility issues or those who prefer a relaxed atmosphere. Sitting allows for better sound clarity and a more engaging visual experience of Lawless’s stage presence. Additionally, this setup minimizes crowding and encourages a more intimate connection with the performance, making it ideal for fans who want to enjoy the music without the chaos of mosh pits or standing crowds. For collectors, some venues are offering special VIP seated packages that include early entry and exclusive merchandise.
4. How to Choose the Best Seats for a Seated Concert
When selecting seats for a seated W.A.S.P. show, consider your priorities: proximity to the stage, overall view, and comfort. Front-row balcony seats often provide the best view of Lawless’s performance and stage antics, but they can be more expensive. Middle and rear balcony sections typically offer a broader perspective of the entire stage setup. If you prefer a more personal experience, opt for seats in the front rows of the floor or in the lower tier sections. Always review the venue’s seating chart carefully and read customer reviews or venue photos to gauge sightlines and comfort levels before purchasing.
5. What to Expect from the Setlist and Performance Style
Despite performing seated, Blackie Lawless’s setlist remains unchanged, featuring classic hits like “I Wanna Be Somebody,” “Blind in Texas,” and “L.O.V.E. Machine.” His performance style blends theatricality with raw energy, and he maintains his signature commanding stage presence even from a seated position. Fans can expect a mix of high-intensity rockers and slower, more melodic tunes, all delivered with the same passion that has defined W.A.S.P. for decades. Expect some visual effects and lighting to compensate for the change in posture, ensuring the show remains visually engaging.
6. Accessibility and Accommodations for Fans
Seated performances tend to be more accessible for fans with mobility challenges or health issues. Many venues have dedicated accessible seating areas, often located near entrances and exits for convenience. If you require special accommodations, contact the venue ahead of time to ensure your needs will be met, and inquire about any available assistance or special passes. This approach ensures that everyone can enjoy Blackie Lawless’s performance comfortably and safely.
7. How This Change Affects Collectors and Merchandise
For collectors, some venues are offering exclusive seated-only merchandise packages, including signed posters or limited-edition items available only at specific seats. Additionally, VIP packages may include early access to seating and meet-and-greet opportunities, providing fans with a more personalized experience. It’s advisable to check the tour’s official website or ticket vendor for special offers related to seated performances, as these can add value and memorable keepsakes to your concert experience.
8. How to Prepare for a Seated Concert Experience
To make the most of your seated W.A.S.P. show, arrive early to find your seat and settle in comfortably. Bring binoculars if you want a closer view of Lawless and the stage, especially if you’re seated farther back. Dress appropriately for the venue’s climate, and consider bringing ear protection if you’re sensitive to loud music. Remember to bring your ticket, ID, and any necessary mobility aids if applicable. Being prepared ensures an enjoyable and stress-free concert experience.
9. How the Audience’s Experience Differs from Standing Shows
The seated format tends to foster a more relaxed atmosphere, encouraging fans to focus on the music and performance rather than crowd dynamics. While some may miss the energy of a standing mosh pit, others appreciate the chance to enjoy a legendary act like Lawless in a more subdued setting. Audience interaction may be less frenetic but can be more intimate, with Lawless often engaging directly with seated fans through eye contact and gestures. This format can also be safer and more comfortable for older fans or those with health concerns.
10. Future of Seated Performances in Rock and Metal
The decision by Blackie Lawless and other artists to perform seated reflects a broader trend toward more inclusive and health-conscious concert experiences. As aging rock legends continue touring, seated shows may become more common, offering a new way for fans to connect with their idols. This shift could also influence venue design and ticketing strategies, blending traditional rock concert energy with a more accessible approach. Fans should stay tuned for future tours, as more artists may adopt similar formats based on audience demand and health considerations.
How to Choose
Choosing the right seats for a seated concert depends on your personal preferences and physical needs. Consider proximity to the stage if you want a more immersive experience, but also think about sightlines, comfort, and price. Review venue maps carefully, and read reviews from previous attendees to understand the view and acoustics of different sections. Ultimately, selecting seats that match your expectations for comfort and engagement will ensure you enjoy Blackie Lawless’s performance to the fullest.
