Watermelon Water: Benefits, Side Effects & How to Make It

Watermelon water is a refreshing, naturally hydrating beverage packed with nutrients and antioxidants. Perfect for hot days, it offers numerous health benefits while being easy to prepare at home.

Ingredients

  • 4 cups fresh watermelon, cubed (about 1 small to medium watermelon)
  • 1-2 teaspoons honey or agave syrup (optional, for added sweetness)
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lime juice (optional, for a tangy flavor)
  • 1 cup cold water or coconut water (for blending)
  • Mint leaves for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Watermelon: Cut the watermelon into small cubes, removing seeds if necessary. Measure out about 4 cups of cubed watermelon.
  2. Blend the Ingredients: In a blender, combine the watermelon cubes, cold water or coconut water, honey or agave syrup (if using), and lime juice. Blend until smooth and well combined, about 30-45 seconds.
  3. Strain (Optional): For a smoother texture, pour the mixture through a fine mesh sieve into a large bowl or pitcher, using a spoon to press out excess juice. This step is optional if you prefer a pulpy drink.
  4. Chill and Serve: Transfer the watermelon water to a pitcher and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to chill. Serve over ice, garnished with fresh mint leaves if desired.

Tips

  • Substitutions: Use honey or agave syrup for natural sweetness; you can also omit sweeteners entirely if your watermelon is sweet enough.
  • Storage: Keep the watermelon water refrigerated in an airtight container for up to 24 hours. Shake or stir before serving as ingredients may separate.
  • Preventing Pulp: If you prefer a clear drink, strain the mixture thoroughly. For a more rustic, textured drink, skip straining.
  • Additional Flavors: Add a pinch of ginger or a few basil leaves for extra flavor variations.

Serving Suggestions

Serve watermelon water chilled in tall glasses over ice, garnished with fresh mint or a slice of lime for a refreshing summer beverage. It pairs well with light salads, grilled seafood, or as a standalone hydrating drink after outdoor activities.
