Wheat Germ Oil: 20 Benefits, Side Effects & How to Make It

Wheat germ oil is a nutrient-rich oil extracted from the germ of wheat kernels. Known for its high vitamin E content and antioxidant properties, it’s widely used both in skincare and as a dietary supplement. Understanding how to incorporate wheat germ oil into your routine can unlock numerous health benefits and enhance your wellness naturally.

Ingredients

  • Wheat germ (preferably organic): 1 cup (150 grams)
  • Food-grade carrier oil (such as olive oil or jojoba oil): 1 cup (240 ml)
  • Optional: vitamin E capsules or oil (for preservation): 2-4 capsules or 1 teaspoon

Instructions

  1. Prepare the wheat germ: Rinse the wheat germ thoroughly under cold water to remove any impurities. Drain well and pat dry with a clean towel.
  2. Roast the wheat germ: In a dry skillet over medium heat, toast the wheat germ for about 5-7 minutes, stirring constantly, until it turns golden brown and releases a nutty aroma. This enhances oil extraction and flavor.
  3. Cool the wheat germ: Remove from heat and allow it to cool completely at room temperature.
  4. Blend with carrier oil: Place the cooled wheat germ in a blender or food processor. Add the carrier oil of your choice. Blend on low for 2-3 minutes until the mixture is well combined and the wheat germ is broken down.
  5. Strain the mixture: Pour the blended mixture through a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth into a clean glass jar or bottle. Use the back of a spoon to press out as much oil as possible.
  6. Optional preservation: If desired, puncture vitamin E capsules and add the oil to the jar for added antioxidant properties and longer shelf life.
  7. Store properly: Seal the jar tightly and store in a cool, dark place. Let it sit for at least 24 hours before using to allow the flavors to meld.

Tips

  • Substitutions: You can substitute the carrier oil with coconut oil, almond oil, or any other vegetable oil based on your preference or intended use.
  • Storage: Keep wheat germ oil in a dark glass bottle away from direct sunlight. It typically lasts up to 6 months when stored properly.
  • Common mistakes: Overheating the wheat germ during roasting can degrade nutrients. Roast until golden but not burnt. Also, avoid using spoiled wheat germ for the best results.
  • Usage: This homemade wheat germ oil can be used in skincare routines, added to smoothies, or drizzled over salads for nutritional benefits.

Serving Suggestions

Incorporate wheat germ oil into your daily diet by adding a teaspoon to your smoothies or salad dressings. For skincare, apply a few drops directly to your face or mix with your moisturizer to boost skin hydration and antioxidant protection. Remember, moderation is key to maximize benefits without overdoing it on fats and calories.
