Yuja Tea: 20 Benefits, Side Effects, Dosage & How to Make It

Yuja Tea: 20 Benefits, Side Effects, Dosage & How to Make It

Yuja tea, a traditional Korean herbal infusion made from the fragrant yuja fruit, is celebrated for its immune-boosting properties and delightful citrus flavor. Perfect for cold seasons or when you need a natural remedy, this tea offers numerous health benefits and a comforting warmth in every sip.

Ingredients

  • Yuja (yuzu) fruit – 3 to 4 large or 6-8 small fruits
  • Honey – 1/2 cup (adjust to taste)
  • Granulated sugar – 1/4 cup (optional, for added sweetness)
  • Filtered water – 4 cups
  • Ginger (fresh, sliced) – 2-inch piece (optional)

Instructions

  1. Wash the yuja fruits thoroughly under cold water to remove any dirt or residues. Pat dry with a clean towel.
  2. Using a sharp knife, cut each yuja in half. Carefully remove the seeds, as they can add bitterness to the tea.
  3. Slice the yuja into thin rounds, keeping the peel intact. If preferred, you can also grate the fruit for a more concentrated infusion.
  4. In a large pot, combine the water and sliced yuja. If using ginger, add the slices at this stage.
  5. Bring the mixture to a gentle boil over medium heat. Once boiling, reduce the heat to low and simmer uncovered for about 30 minutes. This allows the flavors and beneficial oils to infuse into the water.
  6. Remove the pot from heat. Let it cool slightly for 10-15 minutes.
  7. Strain the tea through a fine mesh sieve into a pitcher or container. Press gently on the pulp to extract more flavor.
  8. Add honey and sugar to the warm tea, stirring until fully dissolved. Adjust sweetness according to your preference.
  9. Pour the tea into cups and serve warm. You can also refrigerate it for up to 3 days and reheat before drinking.

Tips

  • Substitutions: If yuja is unavailable, you can substitute with lemon or orange zest, but the unique aroma of yuja is best for authentic flavor.
  • Storage: Keep the brewed yuja tea in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat gently before serving.
  • Common Mistakes: Avoid boiling the tea for too long after adding honey or sugar, as high heat can degrade the delicate citrus aroma and nutrients.
  • Additional Variations: For a more potent infusion, let the sliced yuja steep in hot water for several hours or overnight in the refrigerator before reheating.

Serving Suggestions

Yuja tea is best enjoyed warm, especially during colder months or when you’re feeling under the weather. It pairs wonderfully with light snacks like cookies or traditional Korean rice cakes. For an extra soothing experience, add a splash of honey or a slice of fresh ginger.

In addition to its comforting taste, yuja tea offers numerous health benefits, including boosting immunity, aiding digestion, and providing a rich source of vitamin C. Remember to consume it in moderation, especially if you have allergies or sensitive stomachs.
