Annatto Tea: 20 Benefits, Side Effects, Dosage & How to Make It

Annatto tea is a vibrant, health-boosting beverage made from the seeds of the annatto plant, known for its rich antioxidant properties and unique flavor. It’s a natural way to enjoy numerous health benefits while savoring a delicious and aromatic drink.

Ingredients

  • 2 teaspoons annatto seeds (also known as achiote seeds)
  • 4 cups water
  • Optional sweetener: honey or agave syrup (to taste)
  • Optional flavorings: cinnamon stick or lemon slices

Instructions

  1. Rinse the annatto seeds thoroughly under cold water to remove any debris or dust.
  2. In a medium saucepan, bring 4 cups of water to a gentle boil over medium heat.
  3. Add the rinsed annatto seeds to the boiling water. Optionally, include a cinnamon stick or lemon slices for added flavor.
  4. Reduce the heat to low and let the mixture simmer uncovered for about 10-15 minutes, allowing the seeds to release their vibrant color and beneficial compounds.
  5. Remove the saucepan from heat and allow the tea to steep for an additional 5 minutes for a more intense flavor.
  6. Strain the tea through a fine mesh sieve into a teapot or directly into cups, discarding the seeds and flavorings.
  7. Sweeten to taste with honey or agave syrup if desired. Stir well to combine.
  8. Serve the tea warm or let it cool in the refrigerator for a refreshing iced version.

Tips

  • For a stronger color and flavor, increase the amount of annatto seeds or extend the simmering time slightly, but avoid boiling excessively to prevent bitterness.
  • Store leftover tea in a sealed container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. Reheat gently before serving or enjoy cold.
  • If you can’t find annatto seeds, you can use annatto powder, but reduce the quantity to about 1 teaspoon to prevent overpowering the taste.
  • Be cautious with added sweeteners; start with a small amount and adjust to your preference, especially if you are monitoring sugar intake.

Serving Suggestions

Annatto tea is versatile and can be enjoyed on its own or paired with light snacks like nuts or fruit. Its vibrant hue makes it an attractive addition to brunch tables or a soothing beverage after meals. Try adding a squeeze of lemon for extra zest or a dash of cinnamon for a warming touch.
