Bottle Gourd Tea: 20 Benefits, Side Effects & How to Make It

Bottle gourd tea is a nutritious herbal infusion made from the flesh of the bottle gourd, also known as lauki or doodhi. Renowned for its health-promoting properties, this tea offers a natural way to boost digestion, aid weight loss, and improve overall wellness. Its gentle flavor and numerous benefits make it a refreshing addition to your daily routine.

Ingredients

  • 1 medium-sized bottle gourd (about 500 grams), peeled and chopped
  • 4 cups water
  • 1 teaspoon grated fresh ginger (optional, for added flavor and benefits)
  • 1 teaspoon honey or lemon juice (optional, for taste)
  • A pinch of black pepper (optional, to enhance absorption)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the bottle gourd by peeling its thick skin and chopping it into small, thin pieces to facilitate quicker infusion.
  2. In a medium-sized pot, add the chopped bottle gourd and pour in 4 cups of water.
  3. Bring the mixture to a boil over medium heat, then reduce to low and let it simmer uncovered for about 15-20 minutes, or until the water turns slightly cloudy and the gourd pieces are soft.
  4. If using ginger, add it to the pot during the last 5 minutes of simmering to infuse its flavor and benefits.
  5. Once done, strain the tea into a cup or teapot, pressing gently on the gourd pieces to extract maximum liquid.
  6. Optional: Add honey or lemon juice to enhance flavor, stirring well. Sprinkle a pinch of black pepper if desired.
  7. Serve the tea warm for best results. You can also let it cool and refrigerate for a refreshing cold beverage.

Tips

  • Substitutions: If fresh ginger isn’t available, you can use a pinch of ginger powder. For sweetness, honey can be replaced with jaggery or maple syrup.
  • Storage: Store leftover tea in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours. Reheat before drinking for a comforting experience.
  • Common Mistakes: Avoid overcooking the gourd, as it can turn bitter. Also, don’t skip straining to remove fibrous bits for a smooth tea.
  • Enhancements: Adding a few mint leaves or a cinnamon stick during simmering can add flavor and additional health benefits.

Serving Suggestions

Enjoy bottle gourd tea as a morning detox or a calming evening drink. It pairs well with light snacks or can be sipped alone to reap its health benefits. For an extra boost, combine with a healthy diet and regular exercise.
