Pineapple Peel Tea: 20 Benefits, Side Effects & How to Make It

Pineapple peel tea is a refreshing and health-boosting beverage made from the often-discarded outer layer of the pineapple. Rich in nutrients and antioxidants, this tea offers numerous health benefits and a unique flavor profile, making it a smart addition to your wellness routine.

Ingredients

  • 1 large ripe pineapple (preferably organic) – with peel
  • 4 cups (1 liter) of filtered water
  • 1-2 tablespoons honey or maple syrup (optional, for sweetness)
  • 1 cinnamon stick (optional, for added flavor)
  • 1 teaspoon fresh ginger slices (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the pineapple: Wash the pineapple thoroughly under cold water to remove dirt and pesticides. Use a vegetable brush if necessary. Cut off the top and bottom, then peel the pineapple, saving the peel for the tea.
  2. Slice the peel into smaller strips or chunks to facilitate even infusion. If using optional ingredients, prepare ginger slices and measure out cinnamon stick.
  3. Bring 4 cups of filtered water to a boil in a medium-sized pot or kettle.
  4. Add the pineapple peel, ginger slices, and cinnamon stick to the boiling water. Reduce the heat to low and simmer uncovered for 20-30 minutes. This allows the nutrients and flavors to infuse into the water.
  5. Remove the pot from heat. Strain the tea into a teapot or heatproof pitcher, discarding the solids.
  6. Sweeten the tea with honey or maple syrup if desired. Stir well to combine.
  7. Allow the tea to cool slightly or serve warm. You can also refrigerate it for up to 2 days for a chilled beverage.

Tips

  • Substitutions: If you don’t have fresh ginger, a pinch of ground ginger or ginger powder can be used. For a sweeter tea, add more honey or a splash of agave syrup.
  • Storage: Keep leftover pineapple peel tea refrigerated in an airtight container for up to 48 hours. Reheat gently before drinking or enjoy cold.
  • Common Mistakes: Avoid boiling the peel for too long, as it can turn bitter. Stick to the recommended simmer time to preserve the delicate flavors and nutrients.
  • Organic Pineapple: Using organic pineapple helps minimize pesticide residues on the peel, ensuring a healthier infusion.

Serving Suggestions

Serve pineapple peel tea warm for a soothing experience or chilled over ice for a refreshing summer drink. Garnish with a slice of pineapple or a sprig of mint for added presentation and flavor. This tea pairs well with light snacks or can be enjoyed on its own as a healthful beverage.
