Ceylon Tea: 20 Benefits, Side Effects, Dosage & How to Make It

Ceylon tea, renowned for its rich flavor and aromatic qualities, originates from Sri Lanka and has been cherished worldwide for centuries. Beyond its delightful taste, Ceylon tea offers numerous health benefits, but understanding proper preparation, dosage, and potential side effects can help you enjoy it responsibly. Whether you’re a tea connoisseur or a casual drinker, this guide provides everything you need to know about Ceylon tea.

Ingredients

  • 1 teaspoon of loose Ceylon tea leaves (or 1 tea bag)
  • <1 cup (240 ml) of fresh filtered water

Optional: sweetener (honey, sugar) to taste

Optional: a slice of lemon or a splash of milk

Instructions

  1. Bring the filtered water to a boil in a small saucepan or kettle. For optimal flavor, aim for a rolling boil around 100°C (212°F).
  2. While the water heats, place the 1 teaspoon of loose Ceylon tea leaves into a teapot or infuser. If using a tea bag, simply prepare it as directed.
  3. Once the water reaches a boil, pour it over the tea leaves or bag. Cover the teapot or cup to retain heat and aroma.
  4. Allow the tea to steep for 3-5 minutes. Steeping longer can result in a more robust flavor but may also increase bitterness. Adjust based on your taste preference.
  5. After steeping, remove the tea leaves or bag to prevent over-extraction. Pour the brewed tea into a cup.
  6. Optional: add honey or sugar to sweeten, or a slice of lemon or splash of milk to enhance flavor. Stir gently.
  7. Serve immediately while hot for the best experience. Enjoy your freshly brewed Ceylon tea.

Tips

  • Substitutions: You can use tea bags if loose leaves are unavailable. Opt for high-quality, whole leaf Ceylon tea for richer flavor.
  • Storage: Keep dried tea leaves in an airtight container away from direct sunlight and moisture to preserve freshness.
  • Common mistakes: Avoid over-steeping, which can lead to bitterness. Use filtered water for a cleaner taste and avoid boiling the tea leaves directly in water.
  • Additional flavorings: For a unique twist, add a cinnamon stick or a few mint leaves during steeping.

Serving Suggestions

Ceylon tea pairs well with light snacks such as biscuits, scones, or fruit. It can be enjoyed plain or with added lemon or milk, depending on your preference. For a refreshing twist, serve iced Ceylon tea during warmer months.
