Complete List of Bullet for My Valentine Band Members

Bullet for My Valentine have had seven official members since they formed in Bridgend, Wales, in 1998. The current line-up is Matthew “Matt” Tuck (lead vocals, rhythm guitar), Michael “Padge” Paget (lead guitar), Jamie Mathias (bass) and Jason Bowld (drums). The former members are original bassist Nick Crandle, long-time bassist Jason “Jay” James and original drummer Michael “Moose” Thomas.

The band began as Jeff Killed John, formed by Tuck, Paget, Crandle and Thomas while studying music at Bridgend College, playing Nirvana and Metallica covers before a change of style brought the new name and, in 2002, a five-album deal with Sony BMG. Here is every member, with roles and years.

Matthew “Matt” Tuck – Lead Vocals, Rhythm Guitar (1998–present)

Matt Tuck co-founded the band as Jeff Killed John in 1998 and has fronted it ever since. He also played bass in the studio from 2003 to 2015, the years in which Jason James was the band’s live bassist. He has said his songwriting is strongly influenced by Bruce Springsteen, Bob Seger and Bob Dylan.

Michael “Padge” Paget – Lead Guitar, Backing Vocals (1998–present)

Padge Paget is the other founding member still in the band, playing lead guitar since the Jeff Killed John days.

Jamie Mathias – Bass, Backing Vocals (2015–present)

Jamie Mathias, formerly of the metal band Revoker, was announced as the new bassist on 18 May 2015 alongside the single “No Way Out” and the album Venom, released on 14 August 2015.

Jason Bowld – Drums, Percussion (2017–present; touring 2016–2017)

Jason Bowld, former drummer of Pitchshifter and Tuck’s bandmate in AxeWound, stepped in during 2016 when Michael Thomas took time off for the birth of his first child. At the end of 2017 Bowld replaced Thomas full-time.

Nick Crandle – Bass (1998–2003)

Nick Crandle was the band’s original bassist and a co-founder of Jeff Killed John. He left in 2003.

Jason “Jay” James – Bass, Backing Vocals (2003–2015)

Jay James played bass through the band’s first four albums. On 9 February 2015 the band announced his departure, saying they would name a replacement when the time was right.

Michael “Moose” Thomas – Drums, Percussion (1998–2016)

Moose Thomas was the original drummer and a co-founder. He sat out in 2016 to be with his wife for their first child, with Bowld covering, and by the end of 2017 the change was permanent.
