Complete List of Manic Street Preachers Band Members

Manic Street Preachers have had five official members since they formed in Blackwood, Caerphilly, in 1986. Since 1995 the band has been the three-piece of Nicky Wire (bass) and cousins James Dean Bradfield (vocals and guitar) and Sean Moore (drums). The two former members are original bassist Miles “Flicker” Woodward and rhythm guitarist Richey Edwards, who disappeared on 1 February 1995 and was legally presumed dead in 2008.

All the members attended Oakdale Comprehensive School in Blackwood. Here is every member, with roles and years as the band’s own member list gives them, followed by the touring musicians who have filled out the live band.

James Dean Bradfield – Lead Vocals, Lead Guitar, Piano, Keyboards (1986–present); Rhythm Guitar (1988–1989, 1995–present)

Bradfield has been the band’s singer and lead guitarist from the start, and since Edwards’s disappearance in 1995 has covered rhythm guitar as well.

Sean Moore – Drums, Percussion, Trumpet, Backing Vocals (1986–present)

Bradfield’s cousin Sean Moore has been the drummer throughout, and also plays trumpet on record.

Nicky Wire – Bass, Backing Vocals (1986–present); Rhythm Guitar (1986–1988); Keyboards, Occasional Lead Vocals (1997–present)

Wire began on rhythm guitar in the first line-up, moved to bass when Woodward left in 1988, and has sung occasional lead vocals since 1997.

Richey Edwards – Rhythm Guitar, Backing Vocals (1989–1995)

Edwards joined in 1989 and was a member for the first charting single, “Motown Junk” (1991), and the first three albums, Generation Terrorists (1992), Gold Against the Soul (1993) and The Holy Bible (1994). He disappeared on 1 February 1995, the day he and Bradfield were due to fly to the United States on a promotional tour. The band was put on hold for six months and considered disbanding, but continued with the blessing of his family. He was legally presumed dead in 2008, and his lyrics were used on the 2009 album Journal for Plague Lovers.

Miles “Flicker” Woodward – Bass, Backing and Occasional Lead Vocals (1986–1988)

Woodward was the bassist in the original four-piece and left in 1988, after which Wire took over bass.
