Primal Scream have had twenty-one official members since Bobby Gillespie and Jim Beattie formed the band in Glasgow in 1982. The current line-up is Gillespie (lead vocals), Andrew Innes (guitars and keyboards) and Darrin Mooney (drums), with touring players on keyboards, saxophone and bass. Gillespie is the only member who has been there throughout; guitarist Robert “Throb” Young, keyboardist Martin Duffy and bassist Gary “Mani” Mounfield were the other long-serving figures, and all three have died.
The band’s career took off after Gillespie left his post as drummer of The Jesus and Mary Chain, and Screamadelica (1991) took them into the mainstream. Here is every member, with roles and years as the band’s own member list gives them.
Bobby Gillespie – Lead Vocals (1982–present)
Gillespie co-founded the band with schoolfriend Jim Beattie in 1982, while also drumming for The Jesus and Mary Chain in the band’s early years. He has fronted every line-up.
Andrew Innes – Guitars, Keyboards, Backing Vocals (1987–present)
Innes had played with Gillespie and Alan McGee in the punk band the Drains in 1978, and joined Primal Scream in 1987, when Beattie left.
Darrin Mooney – Drums, Percussion (1997–present)
Mooney has been the drummer since 1997, replacing Paul Mulreany.
Robert “Throb” Young – Bass (1982–1988), Guitars, Keyboards, Backing Vocals (1988–2006)
A schoolfriend of Gillespie’s from King’s Park Secondary, Young was in the band from the start, first on bass and then on guitar through Screamadelica and beyond, until 2006. He died in 2014.
Martin Duffy – Keyboards, Synthesizers, Turntables (1989–2022)
Duffy joined in 1989 and was the band’s keyboardist for 33 years, until his death in 2022.
Gary “Mani” Mounfield – Bass Guitar (1996–2011)
The former Stone Roses bassist played with the band for fifteen years, leaving in 2011. He died in 2025.
Kevin Shields – Guitars, Backing Vocals (1997–2006)
The My Bloody Valentine guitarist was a member for nine years.
Denise Johnson – Co-Lead and Backing Vocals, Tambourine (1990–1995)
Johnson sang on the Screamadelica-era records. She died in 2020.
Jim Beattie – Guitars, Keyboards (1982–1987)
Co-founder with Gillespie, Beattie left in 1987 and was succeeded by Innes.
