Rammstein have six members, and the line-up has never changed. The band formed in Berlin in 1994 with Till Lindemann, Richard Kruspe, Paul Landers, Oliver Riedel, Christoph Schneider and Christian “Flake” Lorenz, and the same six are in the band today.
That stability is rare for a band of Rammstein’s age. Kruspe has said the band stays together because the members respect each other’s wishes to take a break, for personal reasons or for side projects. Before Rammstein, some of the members played in the punk acts Feeling B and First Arsch.
Till Lindemann – Lead Vocals
Till Lindemann is Rammstein’s lead vocalist and lyricist. The band has a fixed way of writing songs: the other five complete the instrumental pieces first, and Lindemann then writes and sings the lyrics over them. In 2015 he started a separate project, Lindemann, which he runs alongside Rammstein.
Richard Kruspe – Lead Guitar and Backing Vocals
Richard Kruspe plays lead guitar and sings backing vocals. Outside Rammstein he fronts his own group, Emigrate, which he works on during the band’s quieter periods. Kruspe is also the member who has explained the band’s approach to its unchanged line-up in interviews.
Paul Landers – Rhythm Guitar and Backing Vocals
Paul Landers is the band’s rhythm guitarist and also sings backing vocals. With Kruspe he forms the twin-guitar wall that sits under Lindemann’s vocals on every Rammstein album.
Oliver Riedel – Bass Guitar
Oliver Riedel has played bass guitar in Rammstein since the start. He is the band’s only bassist.
Christoph Schneider – Drums and Percussion
Christoph Schneider plays drums and percussion. On all Rammstein releases he is credited as “Christoph Doom Schneider”.
Christian “Flake” Lorenz – Keyboards and Synthesizers
Christian Lorenz plays keyboards and synthesizers. He is usually called “Flake”, and on all Rammstein releases he is credited as “Doktor Christian Lorenz”. The keyboards give the band much of its industrial sound, so his part is often what makes a Rammstein song recognisable.
Has Rammstein Ever Changed Members?
No. Rammstein have had one line-up since 1994, which means the list of current members is also the complete list of members. The band has never had a former member.
The band signed with Motor Music after winning a local contest. It released its debut album, Herzeleid, in 1995 with producer Jacob Hellner, followed by Sehnsucht in 1997, which debuted at No. 1 in Germany. The same six musicians played on both.
