How the MC5 Line-up Came Together

The band’s origins go back to the friendship between guitarists Wayne Kramer and Fred Smith. Each led his own group, Smith’s Vibratones and Kramer’s Bounty Hunters. The most committed members eventually united under Kramer’s leadership with Billy Vargo on guitar and Leo LeDuc on drums, while Smith played bass.

The group then found a singer in Rob Derminer, who first auditioned as a bass guitarist and briefly held that role in 1964. He renamed himself Rob Tyner and conceived the name MC5, short for “Motor City Five”, based on the band’s Detroit roots. After Tyner moved from bass to vocals, the line-up stabilised in 1965 with the arrival of Michael Davis and Dennis Thompson.
