How to Fix You Require Permission from System Error in Windows 11

If you’re encountering the “You require permission from the system” error in Windows 11, it can prevent you from accessing or modifying files and folders. This guide helps you resolve this permissions issue step-by-step, restoring your ability to manage your files smoothly. Before starting, ensure you are logged in with an administrator account, as administrative privileges are often required to change permissions.

What You’ll Need

  • Administrator access to your Windows 11 PC
  • Basic familiarity with Windows File Explorer
  • Optional: Command Prompt or PowerShell (for advanced steps)

Step-by-Step

  1. Identify the Problem File or Folder: Locate the file or folder that shows the permission error. Right-click on it and select Properties.
  2. Open Security Settings: In the Properties window, click on the Security tab. Here, you’ll see the list of users and their permissions.
  3. Check Your Permissions: Select your user name from the list. If your permissions are set to Read-only or you see a message indicating lack of permission, proceed to change this.
  4. Change Permissions: Click the Edit button. In the new window, select your user account again, then check the box next to Full control. Click Apply and then OK.
  5. Take Ownership of the File/Folder: If permission changes are denied, you may need to take ownership. Right-click the file/folder, select Properties, then go to the Security tab, and click Advanced.
  6. Change Owner: Near the top, click on Change next to the owner label. Enter your user account name, click Check Names to verify, then click OK. Check the box that says Replace owner on subcontainers and objects if applicable, then click Apply.
  7. Reapply Permissions: After taking ownership, repeat the permission change process to grant yourself full control.
  8. Use Command Prompt for Persistent Fixes: For stubborn issues, open Command Prompt as administrator. Use the command: icacls
