Magnesium Water: Benefits, Side Effects & How to Make It

Magnesium water is a simple yet potent beverage that offers numerous health benefits due to its high magnesium content. It’s easy to prepare at home and can support muscle function, relaxation, and overall wellness when incorporated into your daily routine.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup magnesium chloride flakes (about 120 grams)
  • 1 liter filtered water
  • Optional: a few drops of lemon juice or a pinch of sea salt for flavor

Instructions

  1. Start by boiling the filtered water in a pot or kettle to ensure cleanliness and to aid in dissolving the magnesium flakes effectively.
  2. Once the water reaches a rolling boil, remove it from heat and allow it to cool slightly until it’s warm but not hot (around 40-45°C or 104-113°F).
  3. Pour the warm water into a clean glass jar or bottle.
  4. Add the magnesium chloride flakes to the warm water. Stir continuously until the flakes are fully dissolved, which should take about 5-10 minutes. Using a non-metallic spoon or stirrer is recommended to prevent any reaction with the magnesium.
  5. Once dissolved, let the solution cool completely to room temperature.
  6. If desired, add a few drops of lemon juice or a pinch of sea salt to enhance the flavor. Stir gently to incorporate.
  7. Transfer the magnesium water to a sealed container or bottle and store it in the refrigerator. It should stay fresh for up to 2 weeks.
  8. To consume, shake the bottle well and drink about 100-200 ml daily, preferably on an empty stomach or before bed for relaxation benefits.

Tips

  • Ensure you use high-quality, food-grade magnesium chloride flakes for safety and maximum benefits.
  • Always store magnesium water in a sealed container in the refrigerator to prevent contamination and spoilage.
  • If you experience gastrointestinal discomfort, reduce the dosage or dilute the solution further.
  • For a milder taste, you can dilute the magnesium water with more filtered water or add natural flavorings like mint or cucumber slices.

Serving Suggestions

Magnesium water can be enjoyed as a daily supplement to support overall health. Many people prefer drinking it in the morning to boost energy or before bed to promote relaxation and better sleep. It also pairs well with smoothies or herbal teas for a nourishing hydration boost.
