Mouth Ulcers: Causes, Prevention, Treatments & Home Remedies

Mouth Ulcers: Causes, Prevention, Treatments & Home Remedies

Mouth ulcers are small, painful sores that develop inside the mouth, often caused by various factors like stress, injury, or nutritional deficiencies. Understanding their causes and how to prevent or treat them can help reduce discomfort and promote faster healing.

Ingredients

  • Salt – 1 teaspoon
  • Baking soda – 1 teaspoon
  • Turmeric powder – ½ teaspoon
  • Milk of magnesia – 1 teaspoon
  • Fresh aloe vera gel – 1 tablespoon
  • Warm water – 1 cup
  • Clove oil – 2 drops (optional for pain relief)
  • Fenugreek seeds – 1 teaspoon (for rinses)

Instructions

  1. Prepare a salt and baking soda rinse by dissolving 1 teaspoon of salt and 1 teaspoon of baking soda in a cup of warm water. Swish this mixture around your mouth for about 30 seconds, then spit out. Repeat 2-3 times daily to reduce inflammation and promote healing.
  2. Create a soothing honey and turmeric paste by mixing 1 tablespoon of honey with ½ teaspoon of turmeric powder. Apply this directly to the ulcer using a clean finger or cotton swab. Leave it on for 10-15 minutes before rinsing with warm water. Repeat 2-3 times daily.
  3. Use milk of magnesia by applying a small amount directly onto the ulcer using a cotton swab. It helps neutralize acids and provides a protective coating, aiding in faster healing. Do this 2-3 times a day.
  4. Extract fresh aloe vera gel from an aloe leaf and apply directly to the ulcer. Aloe vera has anti-inflammatory and healing properties. Repeat 2-3 times daily until the ulcer heals.
  5. For pain relief, dilute 2 drops of clove oil in a teaspoon of carrier oil or water and gently dab onto the sore. Use sparingly to avoid irritation. Do this once or twice daily as needed.
  6. Prepare a fenugreek seed rinse by boiling 1 teaspoon of fenugreek seeds in 2 cups of water for 10 minutes. Strain and let it cool. Use this as a mouthwash 2-3 times daily to reduce bacteria and promote healing.
  7. Maintain good oral hygiene by brushing gently twice daily and avoiding spicy or acidic foods that can irritate the ulcer.

Tips

  • Substitute honey with coconut oil if allergic, as it also has soothing and antimicrobial properties.
  • Store aloe vera gel in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a week; always use fresh gel for best results.
  • Avoid eating spicy, acidic, or crunchy foods that can worsen mouth ulcers or irritate the sore area.
  • Be cautious with clove oil; use only a few drops diluted to prevent burning or irritation.

Serving Suggestions

While mouth ulcers are not food, maintaining a nutritious diet rich in vitamins B12, C, and iron can help prevent their recurrence. Incorporate fruits, vegetables, and dairy into your meals to support oral health and reduce the chances of future ulcers.
