The current members of Styx are James “J.Y.” Young (guitars, vocals), Chuck Panozzo (bass), Tommy Shaw (guitars, vocals), Todd Sucherman (drums), Lawrence Gowan (keyboards, vocals), Will Evankovich (guitar) and Terry Gowan (bass). James Young and Chuck Panozzo are the two founding members still in the band, and Panozzo has played part-time since 2003. Dennis DeYoung, the original keyboard player and singer, left in 1999.
Styx formed in Chicago, Illinois, in 1972. The original line-up was Dennis DeYoung, James “J.Y.” Young, John “J.C.” Curulewski and the brothers Chuck and John Panozzo. Here is each current member, with roles and years as the band’s member list gives them.
James “J.Y.” Young (1972–1984, 1990–1991, 1995–present)
Guitars, backing and lead vocals, and occasional keyboards. Young is a founding member and has been part of every Styx line-up.
Chuck Panozzo (1972–1984, 1990–1991, 1995–present)
Bass and backing vocals. Panozzo is the other founder still in the band. He has been a part-time member since 2003, and Terry Gowan also plays bass in the current line-up.
Tommy Shaw (1975–1984, 1995–present)
Guitars, lead and backing vocals, and occasional mandolin and banjo. Shaw replaced Curulewski in late 1975, and Crystal Ball (1976) was his first album with the band.
Todd Sucherman (1995–present)
Drums, percussion and occasional backing vocals. Sucherman has been the drummer since 1995. The original drummer, John Panozzo, played from 1972 to 1991 and died in 1996.
Lawrence Gowan (1999–present)
Keyboards, lead and backing vocals, and occasional acoustic guitar. Gowan took the keyboard and vocal role in 1999, the year Dennis DeYoung’s time in the band ended.
Will Evankovich (2021–present)
Guitar, backing vocals, and occasional mandolin and keyboards. Evankovich worked with Styx as a session musician, guest and producer from 2015 to 2021 before becoming a full member in 2021.
Terry Gowan (2024–present)
Bass and backing vocals. Terry Gowan joined in 2024, taking over from Ricky Phillips, who played bass from 2003 to 2024.
