Cashew Butter: Benefits, Nutrition, Side Effects & How to Make It

Cashew butter is a creamy, nutrient-dense spread made from roasted cashews blended into a smooth paste. It’s a versatile and healthy alternative to peanut butter, offering a rich flavor and numerous health benefits. Making it at home allows you to control the ingredients and enjoy a fresh, preservative-free spread.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups raw cashews
  • 1-2 tablespoons neutral oil (e.g., coconut oil, avocado oil) – optional
  • Pinch of salt – optional
  • 1-2 teaspoons honey or maple syrup – optional for sweetness

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Spread the cashews evenly on a baking sheet and roast for 10-12 minutes, stirring halfway through to ensure even roasting. Allow to cool slightly.
  2. Transfer the cooled cashews to a food processor. Pulse a few times to break them down, then process continuously for 5-8 minutes. Initially, the nuts will turn into a crumbly mixture, then gradually become creamy.
  3. If the mixture is too thick or not blending smoothly, add 1 tablespoon of neutral oil and process again. Add more oil if needed, one teaspoon at a time, until desired consistency is reached.
  4. For added flavor, add a pinch of salt and sweetener like honey or maple syrup. Process until everything is well combined and smooth.
  5. Transfer the cashew butter to a clean jar or airtight container. Store at room temperature for up to 2 weeks or in the refrigerator for up to 1 month.

Tips

  • Use raw or roasted cashews: Raw cashews are ideal for a milder flavor, but roasted cashews will give a richer, deeper taste. Adjust roasting time accordingly.
  • Adding oil: If your processor struggles to blend the nuts into a smooth butter, a tablespoon of neutral oil can help achieve a creamier consistency.
  • Storage tips: Keep your cashew butter in an airtight jar at room temperature for up to 2 weeks. For longer storage, refrigerate, which may cause it to firm up slightly.
  • Common mistakes: Overprocessing can cause the butter to become oily or greasy. Stop processing once it reaches a smooth, spreadable consistency.

Serving Suggestions

Enjoy homemade cashew butter spread on toast, drizzled over oatmeal, blended into smoothies, or used as a dip for fruits and vegetables. Its creamy texture and nutty flavor make it a versatile addition to many dishes.
