Yellowcard are an American rock band formed in Jacksonville, Florida, in 1997 by a group of friends from the Douglas Anderson School of the Arts. Their pop-punk sound is instantly recognisable for its violin, and the violinist, Sean Mackin, is the only original member still in the band. Singer Ryan Key, the voice of “Ocean Avenue”, actually started out as a guest vocalist. Here is the complete list of Yellowcard members, with instruments and years.

Who Was in the Original Line-Up (1997–2002)
Yellowcard’s original line-up was Ben Dobson on vocals, Todd Clary on guitar and vocals, Ben Harper on guitar, Warren Cooke on bass and Longineu Parsons III on drums. Ryan Key, then frontman of Modern Amusement, appeared as a guest on background vocals, as did violinist Sean Mackin, who was brought in for more songs on the second album Where We Stand. The band then fired Dobson and replaced him with Key, which shifted the style from hardcore punk to pop punk. Soon after the Still Standing EP in early 2000, Todd Clary left and Key took on both his guitar duties and Dobson’s vocals. Warren Cooke left for personal reasons on July 16, 2002, and Pete Mosely of Inspection 12 joined four days later.
How the Ocean Avenue Line-Up Came Together (2003–2007)
Mosely left during the recording of Ocean Avenue to finish an Inspection 12 album, and the band chose Alex Lewis as bassist; Lewis’s sister sang on the album track “View from Heaven”. Mosely returned in 2004 and stayed until 2007. After months of tension over Ben Harper’s growing involvement with his indie label Takeover Records, Harper was removed from the band and replaced by Ryan Mendez of Staring Back ahead of Lights and Sounds, released January 24, 2006. Mosely announced his departure while touring Japan in late 2007, and Josh Portman of Near Miss and Staring Back took over on bass as a touring member.
Why the Bass Spot Changed Again (2008–2014)
In April 2008 the band announced an indefinite hiatus, citing individual member situations, and played an acoustic tour that spring before stopping. When Yellowcard reformed in 2010, Sean O’Donnell of Reeve Oliver, who had already worked with Key in the side project Big If, became the bass player. Portman returned as a full member in 2012, and Longineu Parsons III, the last of the founding rhythm section, left in 2014.
What Happened After the Break-Up and Reunion (2017–present)
Following the self-titled album Yellowcard (2016) and its supporting tour, the quartet of Key, Mendez, Portman and Mackin disbanded in 2017. Key and Mendez formed the electronic duo JEDHA in 2021. The band announced a reunion in May 2022 and played its first show back on September 17, 2022, at Riot Fest in Chicago, performing Ocean Avenue in full. The reunited line-up is the same final four, with Brunkvist on drums, and has since released the Childhood Eyes EP (2023) and the album Better Days (2025).
